I bought one back on Dec 18th from Fry's. It is supposed to be delivered this afternoon, I will be sure and let you know what I think.

Edit: By the way, amazon has it for $2,018.88 shipped, assuming you don't have to pay tax there.

I prefer LCD or plasma, but you can't wrong with any of these, imo. you'll love it.
I  my 42" Sammy plasma.

I've had the 50" version for 6 months and am happy with it.

Check prices at OneCall.com too, they've had some good deals.

Be sure to register the set with Samsung online, it adds 6 months to your warranty.

this is not for me. its for my gf's parents. her dad asked my opinion on this tv. not having had any personal experience with this tv, i thought Id ask here. Online reviews seem to be good.

Anyways i think they want a 60" tv. And a LCD or Plasma that size would be considerably more money.

But I do agree that LCDs and Plasmas have superior PQ

IIRC Viper GTS owns a Samsung 61" 1080p DLP and loves it. I'm not sure if it's the same model or not.

Your girlfriends parents should also consider LCoS (Liquid Crystal on Silicone) technology.

Unfortunately your choices are currently limited to the awesome Sony SXRD and JVC HD-ILA which is available at CostCo for cheap.

I have the 50" version of that set and love it. Great picture! Make sure you get or have an HD source though...it looks soooo much better than a non-digital source!

I have an HLS-6187W, as RossMAN mentioned.

You should be able to do better on the price, I paid $1797 for mine from BestBuy. Granted I was price matching to Fry's, but it was still above their cost so if you push you should be able to get them down some. The sales guy said I was paying $20 more than what he'd be able to get it for if he bought it himself, so assuming a cost + 5% BB employee discount that would put their cost around $1700.

A few things to look for:

1) Check the manufactured date. Ideally you want something December 2006 or later, and the later the better. The newer sets have a number of improvements including an updated firmware that allows for disabling overscan and a more durable light engine.

2) Check closely for pincushioning. The HLS series are somewhat notorious for it. Mine's pretty good, but I've seen pictures of some that are terrible.

And of course, check the AVS Forum thread on the HLS series. Overall they're excellent TV's for the money, but there are always better sets if you have the cash to throw at it.
