Friend of mine wants to build his first computer, I'm helping him out. We want to build him a moderate gaming machine - nothing extreme, just something that will get the job done decently in relatively new games. I picked out all of the following from Newegg, please judge it:

*prices include shipping*

(Newegg) CHAINTECH VNF4/Ultra Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail $ 88.50
(Newegg) AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Venice 1GHz FSB Socket 939 Processor Model ADA3000BPBOX - Retail $146.00
(Newegg) CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Unbuffered Dual Channel Kit System Memory Model VS1GBKIT400 - Retail $ 84.82
(Newegg) GIGABYTE GV-NX66T128D Geforce 6600GT 128MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card - Retail $163.00
(Newegg) Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 SATA NCQ ST3120827AS 120GB 7200 RPM 8M Cache Serial ATA150 Hard Drive - OEM $ 85.99
(Newegg) NEC Beige IDE DVD Burner Model ND-3520A BG - OEM $ 40.99
(Newegg) SPARKLE FSP400-60THN ATX12V 2.01 400W Power Supply - OEM $ 76.98
(Newegg) Antec Solution SLK3000-B Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Retail $ 61.99
(Newegg) ViewSonic VP171B-2 Black 17" 8ms LCD Monitor - Retail $339.99
(Newegg) Logitech 967502-0403 Black PS/2 Wired Standard Value Keyboard - OEM $ 13.99
(Newegg) Logitech Value Optical 953544-0403 White 3 Buttons 1x Wheel PS/2 Optical Mouse - OEM $ 10.99

TOTAL $1113.24

Thanks!

Thanks everyone.

Monitor look okay?

The cheapest X800 XL on Newegg is close to $300, way too much more money. So which would be better, a standard X800 (not Pro, XT, XL) or the 6600 GT?

 Everything is good, but maybe upgrade the video card to an x800 for a little more power. Maybe even an x800 Pro or x800XL if you get a good deal on one.

X800 beats 6600 GT in everything but Doom 3 Theres one for $145 on Newegg after a $30 MIR or $175 without MIR. The X800 seems to hang between 6800 NU and X800XL
Wow, I'm convinced, thanks. X800 vanilla it is, then.

that too much on that PSU, i'd go with Fortron 450w $50 or XClio 450w $53. the sparkle's not a bad PSU, just too much when you can get a PSU thats just as good for less.

that PSU the exact same as this one for $40

**edit** not exactly the same, the Fortron is actually rated better, it has higher amps on the 2 12V rails.

Not really familiar with Fortron, and he really doesn't need anything over 400W at all.

But if anyone can recommend an ATX 2.0 PSU from a good brand name with at least 400W for less than the price I posted, I'd be happy to see it.

I dunno....I've always thought it's wise to be picky with PSU brands, for example sticking to the very best, i.e. Enermax, Antec, Sparkle, etc. Never heard of either brand.

fortron makes sparkle, did you even look at the picture of that sparkle it says FSP Group on it...they are exactly the same. and xclio is made by channel well, who also makes antec. that xclio model has also gotten many excellent reviews.

Okay then, thanks, never knew that. How come Sparkle is hailed so much then when I don't hear about Fortron too much?

I'd rather go with a 660GT. WHy? Because it shines when AA and AF are enabled.

if by shines you mean it cuts the framerate in half, then i guess it does...
