I think it was good to get Van Horn and his contract out of Jersey. He really had worn out his welcome. And Dikembe does give them a strong defensive presence down low, especially in the East. However, the deal leaves the Nets needing another offensive player, preferably a shooter.
I think one of the big reasons the Nets were so successful and, at times, so difficult to defend last season was that all 5 guys out on the floor were legitimate scoring threats. Van Horn, for all his inconsistency soft play, really could knock down the open J. MacCullough, I think, is a better low post scoring threat and dump-off finisher than a 38-year-old Mutombo. For all anyone knows, Mutomobo may be 40.
The deal will certainly improve the team's defense and rebounding, but I have to wonder if we'll see the exciting, high-octane offense we saw last year. Yes, Jefferson is more athletic than Van Horn and should improve in his sophomore season - which will make them more dangerous on the break. But I wonder if the half-court offense which at its best last year saw lots of movement, cutting and passing will be bogged down with Mutombo clogging the middle and no outside shooting threat (I don't consider Kittles one) to prevent teams from packing it in near the basket.
