Hello

For those who have seen or used any of the following 17" LCDs, can you
please provide your opinion?

1) Sony SDM-HS73
2) Sony HX-73
3) Sony X-73
4) Planar PX171M
5) Planar PL-171M
6) Hitachi CML175SXW (or CML174)
7) NEC LCD1765

I've only been able to find Sony SDM-HS73, HX-73 and NEC LCD1765 at
the local stores (Fry's, CompUSA and BestBuy). Of these 3 that I've
seen, NEC LCD1765 had the best picture and sharpest text, followed by
Sony HX-73 and Sony SDM-73. From this group, only Sony HX-73 has a DVI
input. As far as the response times are concerned, Sony HX-73's and NEC
LCD1765's are 16 ms while Sony SDM-HS73's is 20 ms.

I've heard that the price for Sony SDM-HS73 after rebate is $399 after
a $50 rebate, at Fry's Electronics. This alone makes the monitor very
attractive.

OTOH, I've read great reviews on the Hitachi panel, Planar PL-171M
and PX171M.

Therefore I would like to read anyone's opinion who has either seen or used
any of these LCDs, specially the ones that I can not evaluate before
purchase (Planar, Hiatchi, Sony X-73).

If per the unlikely chance there is someone who has seen all 7 of these
monitors, which one would you choose regardless of price? :)

Thanks very much in advance.

I have a Nec 1760NX and love it. Does the Nec 1765 have a DVI input? If it does go for it.

No, unfortunately it does not. There is a lot of debate regarding whether DVI makes any difference at all.

How is the sharpness of the text on 1760NX? On 1765, it is outstanding.

Thanks

There's not that much question of whether DVI makes a big difference - I'm pretty sure in 90% of cases it does
that being said, I'm on a very high-quality analog LCD and I'm happy.
then again I've never used DVI so I dont know what im missing =p

Having owned an NEC 1760NX since last march, and having used both the Analog and Digital inputs, I can say that the digital input offers a _subtle_ but perceptible improvement. I'm still not sure if it was worth the $10 I paid for the DVI cable.

Have the planar px171m and love it. Great adjustable base, very bright, runs all my games (BF1942 etc.) great off a 9800 pro w/dvi. The viewing angle is perhaps not as good as, say, an apple lcd, but I think that kind of comes with the territory on these 16ms LCD panels. I highly recommend it, though I got mine for $310 from Dell, I don't think you're going to find that kind of deal right now. One thing, the bezel is about 3/4-7/8 in. wide, which I don't mind, but some people prefer the really thin bezel a la several of the Samsung or Sceptre models.

Bottom line: great gaming monitor, sharp text, good ergonomics.

Thanks for the reply and I'm glad that you've found a LCD that you are happy with.

By any chance have you seen the NEC LCD1765? If so, can you compare it to your PX171M?

Thanks again.

You should take alook at the 16MS LG LCD's, they are under $425 and have a 3 year exchange warranty.:)

I think all the panels you listed are all AU panels so they all should look and perform the same. Stay away from the 1765 from NEC if your PC is near bright light, like a window or something. The glass on the front reflects horridly and makes it useless.

The 1760 has extremily sharp text on DVI. I think they use the same panel, but DVI makes a really nice difference.

1) Sony SDM-HS73 no dvi
2) Sony HX-73 dvi, good quality, expensive
3) Sony X-73 dvi, old model though
4) Planar PX171M dont know
5) Planar PL-171M dont know
6) Hitachi CML175SXW (or CML174) heard good things about it
7) NEC LCD1765 pic quality is good, but no dvi, sexy reflective feel

i own two 1760NX and a 1760V. i have the two NXs side by side, one with DVI,one with VGA. whatever anyone tells you, DVI makes a very noticable difference. GET DVI, LCDs are a waste without it if your getting anything bigger than 15 inches.

i heard the 1765 uses a different LCD panel, might want to look into that.

i <3 my LCDs, a year strong,no dead pixels or issues. perfection.

Sony X series is made in Korea, HX/HS/S are made in China. HX/HS are too bright for normal usage.
Planar is good buy for the warranty. Good price at Dell SB, having 15% off.
Hitachi is good buy for the price and spec, good price at monitorsdirect.com as it's linked from Hitachi's official website.
NEC is average, no need to consider.

I'd choose Planar PX171M from above.
