Opinions on the Canon Rebel XSi?

I am about to take the plunge on a DSLR and would like some input. I've kind of zeroed in on the Canon Rebel XSi. Amazon is currently offering it for $552.

Why the XSi specifically?

I grabbed a T1i from Adorama for only a few $ more: http://www.adorama.com/ICADRT1IKRA.html though my kit was less than $600 after Bing but didn't come with some of the extras like the mem card, bag and spare battery.

Originally, I was leaning towards the XS and have been using the few bucks more mentality in getting towards the XSi since it is just 50 more. If i go with the T1i that would be $180 more than I originally budgeted. Also, the link you provided is a refurbished camera. I would prefer to buy a new one.

Also, what class and size of sdhc card do you recommend?

Not worth $550, that's for sure. Maybe $400 for the kit.

Search craigslist, you can find D5000s and T1i for that much. Also, try to find a kit with a prime lens, or something other than the kit, they're great to start with, but everyone changes them soon enough.

I have a XSi. Although it is a fine camera, I wouldnt buy it new. 550 is too much for it. See if you can find a body only used on CL. I bought mine (body only + 1 8 gig SD extreme III card + 2 batteries) for $400 from CL almost 1.5 yrs ago. So Im sure you can find it for cheaper now. CL can be hit or miss, but as long as you test out the camera thoroughly along with all the camera functions and check the sensor (put the lens cap on, cover the viewfinder, and take a 30 sec exposure. Then check the image for any hot spots), you'll be fine.

And instead of the kit lens, get yourself a Tamron 17-50 lens.

But I will say that I played with my friend's T2i, and that camera is much much better in low light than my XSi. But that camera will be a lot more.

The XSi is definitely a great beginner's DSLR. But you should be buying it cheaper than retail, since its 2 generations behind (T1i/T2i). I've seen like-new kits for $450 on CL.

My friend has also got Canon Rebel XSi.
Its picture quality is really amazing.
Now I am also thinking to buy this for me.
Pls tell me am I going for the right thing?

Why do you prefer a new over a refurbished when they both have the same warranty? I have no reservations with mine and it's a refurbished, PLUS you can get the T1i even cheaper than the link I posted. That was the only one I found at the time.

As for card class, I have no idea, I just used the card I had on hand. Size really depends on how many pictures and etc. you plan to take without being able to unload it.
