My GF is looking to spend around $1000 CDN ($811 USD) on a new digital camera.

Looking around, we found the PowerShot Pro1. Steves-Digicams seems to give it a pretty good review.

What are your thoughts?

Its a nice camera for its price of $500 USD or so. Since your GF doesn't mind the size of the camera, I personally would go with the S2 IS. She probably will never used the 8mp of the Pro 1 and the 12x Optical zoom with IS will come in handy more often.

check out dpreview.com, steve's reviews, and image-resource.com for opinions from the pros. I think the Pro 1 is over priced for what it does. If you're having to pay $800 USD for it, do not buy it for sure. Even dell has it for ~$500 USD....but even then, I think there are some better cameras out there for $500...or less.

If you have $800 to spend on a camera, I would get a Canon Digital Rebel XT (350D). Then again, it is not a point and shoot camera, so it may not be what she is looking for. I would check out dpreview.com, as others have stated, and find a nice P&S digital camera for $400-500.

Well, the biggest thing that she wants is to be able to take pictures of animals, so a good zoom is necessary.

She will almost never print the pictures, but it should be able to print a standard 4x6.

She does want a good camera that she can learn to use to take very good pictures, but also be able to use as a P&S before she learns.

It also has to take CF cards. She's got a couple GB of cards, so she doesn't want them to be wasted.

Also, she doesn't want a Sony :)
