I bought one of these yesterday. Never owned a nice watch before and have been looking at Omega and Rolex but they're too expensive IMO.

Anyway, it is the day date model with 41mm case and blue dial. I think it looks great, very classy but not too busy.

I wear it on my left wrist along with my wedding band which is a simple titanium band. This is all the jewelry I wear.

Tag used to be pretty nice quality - I'm not sure if they still are, I'd say they're on the entry level of high end automatics.

Personally I'll stick to the mid-range automatics (sub-$400 or so) until I can pony up for something much nicer (omega, rolex, panerai, etc). I also much prefer buying boutique watches (eg http://www.benaruswatches.com/)

Does the face look more blue IRL than in does in the photo? When I think of Tag Heuer I think of bright colors on the watch face.

I think the quality is pretty good with this Tag. It is flawless with sapphire crystal and brushed stainless case. MSRP is $2600 for this watch. They are entry level for luxury watches for sure.

I was looking at a Rolex Date Just with grey face and diamonds for the number markings and an Omega (forget which one now as it was back in September), both watches were in the $10k range but I just didn't want to spend that much money on a watch right now. I really liked the Rolex but I'm not sure I would like wearing it every day. It just screams HEY LOOK AT ME I'M WEARING A ROLEX!!! This is more low key but looking at it you can tell it is a nice time piece.

I admire the quality of a nice high end automatic watch and have been wanting one for almost a year now. I think this one will scratch that itch for a while. :D

It is a dark blue. It isn't bright at all which I like. I looked at a couple others but liked this one the best.

Maybe this photo will pick up the color better.

After getting into some pseudo watch collecting I for the most part ignore MSRP numbers, they're ridiculous and can almost nearly be purchased at 50% of the number. I also prefer to not purchase new - you can usually get like new from dedicated collectors with the box, tags and everything for a huge discount.

Very nice dude!

I'd love to get an automatic watch but I'm afraid of looking goofy with one since most have such big case diameters and my wrists are small and pussy. I just did a quick measurement; I'd say about 35mm would be as big as I'd go, and pretty much no watches are that small.

EDIT: Actually, the TAG Carrera Calibre 18 and Calibre 6 (bottom two under "Novelties") would be do-able, maybe. Those are sharp lookin watches.

The $64K questions are who are you trying to impress and are those people impressed by Tag Heuer?

Nobody wears a high end, or even a middle-range watch to tell time. If you want that you could get the same in Timex and if you want wrist jewelry that looks like an entry-level luxury watch you can get something with similar appearance for a lot less. You're hoping that some person or some group of people notices and comments positively. Are those people into Tag watches enough to generate the hoped-for response? If yes, then it's a good purchase.

Tag and Omega overlap in price a bit. Depends on the look you're after of course. In this price range you pretty much just get what gives you a warm fuzzy feeling since that's about the extent of the value. Tag just isn't really my style.

Some of us appreciate fine craftsmanship and the mechanical beauty of an automatic or manual watch. Yes, I could buy a knock-off that looks similar enough from a distance, but the time keeping ability likely won't be the same, there is no aspect of craftsmanship, and it has no value whatsoever.

A similar analogy would be buying a 400HP Kia vs buying a Ferrari. They both have similar engine specs so they're the same thing right? That's all that matters?

You're unfortunately mostly right. I think my smallest automatic comes in around 38mm. I think I occasionally see 36mm mens autos.

I'm not trying to impress anyone.

When my wife's Mom passed away back in April my wife inherited one of her Rolex watches but I learned quite a bit about them when I was trying to determine if it was real or not. I had a strong suspicion that it wasn't so I took it to an authorized Rolex dealer and had her watch authenticated (turned out to be a very old design with a fake bezel and the movement was not Rolex-basically worthless) and while there I looked at some of the new and pre-owned Rolex's they had and was really impressed by how exquisite they are. On a side note, the other watch (that went to my sister-in-law) was real but needed a service and polish from Rolex which cost her $1,000.

I work with a guy who has a nice watch, a Bremont, and I have talked to him about watches a bit in the past 6-7 months and I've been reading quite a bit too. He also has a Tag Heuer but not one of the automatic ones.

I don't wear jewelry, I don't drive a fancy car, I'm not into collecting things but I just wanted a nice high end watch. I also like the idea that it never needs batteries or winding so long as I keep it on my wrist most of the time. I know, there are many watches that are much less expensive that also do this but I wanted something a little nicer.

I was just curious what the perception is of Tag Heuer and if anyone had any insight into the ownership experience, how accurate they are, etc. It's not a chronograph so I know it doesn't meet that level of accuracy. If it is within a minute or two a month I'd be happy with that.

I doubt you could find this particular model used. It is a fairly recent release.

No, you're buying a Ferrari to say "look, I have a Ferrari". And because you hope it gets you laid. Same with watches, you're not buying to tell time and no matter what lies you tell yourself about "fine craftsmanship" that's not the reason either. Cheap watches tell time great and cheap watches can look good too. You're buying a label and paying a huge premium for a label in the hopes of impressing people with the label. There's nothing wrong with that, everyone does it with their cars and their clothes and their electronic gadgets, etc. Just don't make it into something its not.

pretty sure fine craftsmanship is pretty high up on the list of reasons to buy high quality things.

Your crazy if you think everything is just a label

Damn...I had a hard time dropping $600 for the Citizen Eco-Drive World Chronograph A/T AT8030-18F I bought two years ago. (retail was $795)

Looks like this one:

Nice watch...kind of a PITA to keep things set correctly...now looking for one to wear when we're out camping. DO NOT want a Timex...they never fit quite right.
