ok guys heres one for all the leagality fans out there.

backstory: played the dell back to school laptop contest between june and august of last year. won a dell e1705 laptop. never really heard much from them so i e-mailed a couple of times and called once. was then informed that i had violated rules by using more than one e-mail address. WTF! used my one main e-mail throughout the entire contest. turns out my wife, knowing how much i needed a laptop had registered my other two e-mail accounts and was playing as well trying to 'help me win',. i tried to explain that i shouldnt be responsible for that as it was not my intention to play more than once a day.

long story short, they cancelled my win and gave it to someone else. ok, i needed a laptop but i dindt want to be considered a cheater so i let it go right. i mean, it's not like i had paid to enter and someone else got a nice lappy.

current: check my mail today and low and behold a 1099-misc saying that i had prize winnings totalling 1038.89 from e-prize. i tried to contact dell and get the number for e-prize but they were as unhelpful as always and could not understand anything i said and likewise for me.

so, what should i do? any help is appreciated and let me know if i need to clear anything up

ok, when i called they said that there is no way for them to tell me any of the info and that bugging them about it would do no good, i sent a several e-mails and their responses said pretty much the same thing. i wasn't gonna piss off the people who held my winning a laptop in their hands. about a couple weeks later they sent the bad new e-mail. called once more and they basically said too bad, nothing they will do as the prize had already been given to someone else. so i dropped it

thanks geekbabe

Do you still have the email telling you that you had been DQ'd ? make copies of it,it's up to eprize to correct the 1099 error and report to IRS but if they don't you'll need that email as proof that the 1099 was issued in error.

yeah i do still have it luckily, sucks beacaue i have already filed my taxes for last year as well

you need to send eprize a certified letter, return receipt requested ASAP with a copy of the email and the 1099,requested that they fix it, if they don't respond in a timely manner, then go ahead and amend the return, attaching the email and copies of the return receipt.
