Any opinions/experiences on re-using patch panels that have been pulled out? I really have no budget for them in my non-profit project.

Thanks

If the panels still have wires punched down, be careful pulling the wire fragments out of the slots ... pull them straight out of the slot. Some panels use a split-finger IDC (Insulation Displacement Connector/Connection) and any real lateral tension can bend them and render them "flaky."

Think of it as "un-punching" the wire. If you're careful, it shouldn't be an issue.

When you re-punch your wires in, use the low spring setting and try to avoid multiple hits. The more you hit it with a punch, the weaker the IDC force tend to be (i.e.. another road to a flaky connection).

There were (and are) a variety of panels and punch types (110 is the most popular for data); Nortel and Krone are a couple of the others. If your punch doesn't look like it's going to fit the slot, don't force it, you'll ruin the panel (or at least that position).

Good Luck
Scott

LOL! ScottMac, I thought that was assumed. But hats off to you for making it clear.

I gotta quit making assumptions.

Thanks for the good info guys... In my way up the IT ladder I seem to have hurdled over having to do my own wiring until now ;)

I used to think that too ... then I ran into some folks at work that, well ... never mind.

It never hurts to cover the bases. I had some spare time.
