If the panels still have wires punched down, be careful pulling the wire fragments out of the slots ... pull them straight out of the slot. Some panels use a split-finger IDC (Insulation Displacement Connector/Connection) and any real lateral tension can bend them and render them "flaky."
Think of it as "un-punching" the wire. If you're careful, it shouldn't be an issue.
When you re-punch your wires in, use the low spring setting and try to avoid multiple hits. The more you hit it with a punch, the weaker the IDC force tend to be (i.e.. another road to a flaky connection).
There were (and are) a variety of panels and punch types (110 is the most popular for data); Nortel and Krone are a couple of the others. If your punch doesn't look like it's going to fit the slot, don't force it, you'll ruin the panel (or at least that position).
