Opinions? on Open Box laptops

I know this doesn't technically qualify as distributed computing (however if I buy a laptop, it will crack for TA), but I do value the opinions of those in this forum. (Except for Shuxclams. 😉)

I've had my eye on a Fuji E series laptop for quite some time, and I'm in Dallas for a few days in a class. I stop by Fry's and notice they have an open box one with no price.

Now, the sales help (and I use both terms lightly) doesn't know the price and has to ask some manager. He says $50 off. I think that's still too much to pay--I'd say $100 or $150 off and I might take it.

Anyone have an opinion on this or experience with the Fuji laptops?

I'd appreciate any input!

My advice is don't buy anything that isn't a name brand and shrink wrapped from Fry's. I had a horrible time with their service department.

I don't think 150 off for an open box laptop is enough. Especially if it deosn't come with the standard store warranty. You would also want to check with the manufacturer to see if they honor warranties on open box items.

I've never used a Fuji laptop before, but I'm inclined to agree with the majority consensus here, it's not enough of a discount.

You might as well buy a New one, and screw it up yourself. 😀

$50 off...who are they kidding? Open box stuff at most stores usually goes for about 50% off. Did he mix up his words? LOL 🙂

$50 off?? ask for no less than $250 off, that prob. won't work though, so basicly just buy a new laptop, remember there is always a reason why it is open box.... (many times the open boxed items are broken....)

Most "respected" retailers automatically take 10% - 15% off of any "floor model", ie., out of box, unit. That's across the board, whether for furniture, or electronics, or appliances.

If that were a this-year's or current model, normally costing say $1500 boxed, then a respectable retailer will take from $150 - $175 off the price... AT LEAST.

for such a pricey lappy like that one, i would just wait and buy a palo or duron lappy. For pure cracking, those will rape any pentium laptop.

I agree with the majority, $50 bucks is not enough, especially since it is Fry's. I wouldn't accept anything less than 10-20% off.

Also, beware if it was the floor model. A while back I bought the Fry's floor model and it was just pure crap (Bad pixels, DVD not working). In other words, test it out at the store like there's no tomorrow.

I pity the foo in the return lines battling with the "Customer Service Specialists" at Fry's!

I almost took a job last December where I would need to have a laptop. I was looking real hard at Dell's refurb shop where it seemed like $500 off for 6 month old technology was the norm.

I still look at Laptops with a 3 year life expectancy. Get a manufacturer's 3 year warranty and depreciate it out in that time, then dump it and replace it.

Then again, I guess that I shouldn't be talking. I have 2-386 laptops without batteries and they never see the light of day. 🙂

Basically, I try not to buy anything that's refurbished, open box, or used from any store. More often than not, I find that if you try to cut corners, it ends up costing you more in the end. "You get what you pay for."

edit: spelling. Guess it's time for bed. ;D

from what I've head Fuji Lappy's are good... However I Would say mabye if you got 500 dollars off would be a good price because I am sure Fuji, like HP (who I work for) carries No Warranty on any open box products... & because its an open box means that someone probably bought it, had a problem & Than returned it.....

So what your getting is a gamble for a possibly working product, or a big paper weight...
