I've been doing a lot of looking through forums and reviews and this is what I'm planning to order. Tell me what ya think. I don't plan to overclock, and use this computer for school work, movies, and gaming once in a while.

Athlon 64 3200+ (754)
Soltek nf3 250gb motherboard
Leadtek 6600GT
Thermaltake 480w pure silent power PSU
Corsair value select 1gb (2x512mb) pc3200
Sound blaster audigy2 zs
just have to decide on a hard drive

Looks good.

Going 939/PCI-e would allow more upgrade options in the future, but you probably know that if you've been looking around.

I've got nothing against 754 though, it's a good way to get good performance/$ now.

Check out Seagate harddrives. From your "Silent" powersupply I assume you're looking for silence :)

XClio is another PSU to look at in your pricerange. It uses a 120mm fan and would be quieter than the dual smaller fans in the Thermaltake you mentioned.

Yeah, I was looking into the seagate 160gb SATA hd

I chose the 754 over the 939 because of price and I don't plan to upgrade in a while. and when I decide to, it'll probably be time to redo everything

And for silence, yeah, my xp 2100 system right now drives me nuts because of it's high pitched cpu fan sound.

I think that system looks pretty sweet. I went with a 754 system also because every time I upgrade my cpu, I put in a new board anyway, might as well go with low price now.

How much does the 754 + mobo cost?

I believe a 3000+ and a DFI Ultra-D costs 300, and that overclocks usually to 2.4 ghz or up.. ANd you got a full upgrade path.

Looks like it's going to run about $260. With no plans to overclock or upgrade soon I think 754 is a good idea.

I found the 3200 for $159.72 from Portatech from pricewatch, and the Soltlek for about $78 shipped from Newegg

oh yeah, i'm a noob so I don't think I could handle overclocking without busting something. plus don't have too much time to mess with it because of school

Reseller ratings on portatech are craptastic

linky

Are you also aware that it's an OEM CPU = no Heatsink/Fan, no 3 year warranty from AMD?

Thanks for the portatech info. Yeah, I know it's an OEM and was going to get the thermaltake silent boost.

Pricewatch and Froogle are great resources when you pair them with reseller ratings. On their own they're pretty scary though :)
