Opinions on monitor damage. Is it safe to use?

As stated in a previous thread, FedEx damaged a monitor in transit to my place of work. After all claims were paid out, the monitor was declared as scrap since neither our distrubutor or FedEx wanted to claim it. I therefore became the owner of a damaged but working 19" Sony E400. Now the big question is whether it is safe to use. The Trinitron tube appears to be in perfect condition and the convergence is better than some undamaged Sonys I've seen. Besides a non-funtioning Power button (always on or asleep), the rest of the damage appears cosmetic. At least I think it's cosmetic. Any opinions on whether there is any radiation or other concern? About how much will the cost to repair?

i think you should be alright, if you have ever openend a tv, youll see that theres a lot of white space that is not being used for anything, in the same manner i think that his monitor is safe to use, just with a little extra ventilation.

I think I'd go ahead an use it. Just to be safe plug it into a separate power strip & turn it off that way when it will be unattended for some time, just to make sure it doesn't explode and burn your place down ;)

I ran the monitor for a week at the office and it worked just fine. It goes into sleepmode after 20 minutes (Windows default) and wakes with no problems. There are no unusual noises when powering up or operating.

I might take it to a Authorized Sony service center. Even if they charge me $200 to fix, I'll still be way ahead.

You should probably be OK although you might want to check it out with any engineering/repairmen friends you may have too. If you do end up getting rid of it though, you should be able to get something decent for it on egay. . . .

Actually man I'd say its mostly just cosmetic damage. If the switch not working really bothers you take the case off and look around (be a wee bit careful of course) and I'll bet you can see if the switch is broken. I'd just set teh sleep timer or keep the power strip by and turn it off that way, but I'd probably just use it as is :)

The monitor has been off for about 4 days but I'm still wary of opening up the monitor. Last thing I want to do is find out how a defib jolt feels like. I always let my monitor power down on its own anyway so i think I'll just leave it be.

I second what DAM said, the way the pictures look, it wouldn't seem that the tube could possibly have been damaged. If you haven't seen anything wierd in a week, I'd say all is well.
