Opinions on Mazda Miata.

I am thinking about getting rid of the ole Maxima and getting a slightly used Miata.
How much am I going to suffer if I do that? Anyone have a Miata as their sole car? How often do you feel the limitations?
Does the driving experience majority of the time outweigh the hassle of not having enough seats occasionally?
I am single, rarely have any passengers in my car. Don't really haul much stuff, aside from my bike on the bike rack.

How is it a gay car again? Can someone fill me in, I am out of touch with the times. I am not sure what's so gay about a 4 cylinder RWD manual sports car?

Not true, I think blue is the gayest color.

J/K

I don't think men who drive Miatas are gay. VW Cabriolets on the other hand...That has to be the gay man's car of choice.

The car isn't gay, it's not like it has a thing for other male cars' tailpipes or O rings, it's just that most manly manly men don't favor the small jellybean shape and the 4 cylinder fury.

A turbo Miata sounds like it would be really fun for you.

All these people who are dissing the Miata probably have never driven one. Yeah, they look "cute", but they're a lot of fun to drive. You'll probably have to put up with people laughing at you though, the solution is to take them for a ride and get them to pee their pants around the corners.

Does it make the Pontiac Solstice and Lotus Elise gay?

I've driven one (more than one actually). I still think they're your hairdresser and his boyfriend's car. 😉

My friend has one, and I've ridden in the passenger seat. It's a fun car. I don't know how to drive stick, but I tried in a parking lot, and it was fun. He is straight, and it's his 2nd one.

iloveme2 has a miata. that is incentive enough not to get one.
how much were you looking to spend? i'm sure there are much nicer choices in the used car market within your budget.

The 2nd-gen ones are definitely not AS gay. I think a Miata would be a fun weekend car (that is, if I could fit in one), but they are undeniably kinda effeminate. It's a shame, actually, because they are great little sports cars for the money.

Around 15K. What are the nicer choices under 40K miles?

Maybe my eyes are getting worse, but neither of those cars look jellybean shaped to me. I've driven the Miata and the reason I didn't like it was beceause it was cramped and there was no factory hardtop option. Not a bad car for the price if you fit in it and have another for a daily driver, it has a pretty decent aftermarket following from what I understand. One of the forum members here as a supercharged Miata. If I were in the market for this type of vehicle though, I think I'd rather have an MR-2 (91-95).

As long as you can fit in one (very cramped for my 6'2" frame) and don't mind the astonishing lack of cargo space, a Miata is one of the funnest cars you can possibly drive. Handles like a top-fuel accelerates, with the most predictable oversteer I have ever encountered. Top down, sunny day, and a windy 2 lane blacktop with you and your lady heading out on a country excursion is just awesome. But I guess you have to be a car enthuiast to understand, and not just another peckerhead-parader whose only driving experiences are sitting in traffic every day and thinking that every man with a Miata is gay...

edit: the Miata has ALWAYS had a factory hardtop option (removable of course). Since day one.

What does jellybean shaped mean? Solstice doesn't look all that different from Miata to me. Neither does BMW Z3 or Lotus Elise. Am I missing something here? It seems to me like the Miata is the definition of what a small roadster should look like.

OK, now I am totally confused. IKEA is gay too now? I just bought a carpet there last month. Also, are perceptions different in CA than in redneck states? What do CA people think of the Miata?

Don't listen to these bigots and ignorants. A Miata is the not only the definition of what a small roadster should look like, it's also the definition (nay, pinnacle) of how a small roadster should drive.

edit: Though you might be taking this sh!t because you asked how practical a Miata is, and practical and Miata are 2 words that should never be used together in the same sentence, just FYI.

I think the Miata is pretty feminine and I live in the Bay Area.
