Opinions on K&N OIL filters...

I've pretty much accepted the fact that their air filters are bogus and can result in engine getting loads of extra dirt in it, but have any of you guys tried their oil filters?

On paper they sound pretty good, but I have reservations about their use of "resin" to trap particles. Sounds familiar!

Any experiences or insights with these things?
 
Given the actions of certain K&N marketing personnel, I personally will never buy any K&N product because I have no desire to support the company given the actions they apparently endorse.

This is my own personal decision however, and I have not heard anything bad about their oil filters (though I have also not heard anything to suggest that their additional cost is justified).

they don't make their own filters, it was some big contract manufacturer, i think champion, who is highly regarded.

Yup Champion, that is correct

M1 is also made by the same company, and both the K&N and M1 filters are extremely similar. They use the same filter media.

Both are good. I am using a K&N now, because it was part of a 5quarts of oil + filter promotion. And will by one again just because it has the wrench off thing at the top.

Same here.

The ONLY thing the K&N oil filter has over other filters is the nut on the end. I don't think it is worth it for just that.

They use similar media. The M1 is much more restrictive than the K&N. The K&N is actually closer in construction to the Napa Gold if my memory serves. At least on all the filters i've cut open in my testing.

wrong.

not all oil filters are equal, and K&N is on the upper tier of filtering media.

atleast in the world of motorcycle filters. many tests were done, charts were made. its much less easy with cars sadly

I run Bosch on my cars when I can

hmm I never read that before. I was trying to find the whole thread where they cut open the oil filters, but I cant find it any more, was it on some jeep forum or bobistheoilguy?

BITOG has some, but I cut my own open before I use them on my car. The old line of supertech was the same as the K&N but with a slightly less restrictive media. ST then switched manufacturers and now they are the equivalent of the fram sadly.

Right now, I think (at least for my car) the napa gold is the best value.

Unless it was recent the walmart ST filters are still made by champion. They use the Ecore design now and are still way better then a fram. Not the best but still worth the price and some.

I think an extra dollar or two would be better spent on a Purolator Pure One filter at Advance Auto or somewhere else, rather than spending any $$ on anything out of WalMart.

More money does not necessarily equal better quality.
 
Why even debate it, go with OEM. Unless somebody can actually prove that an OEM oil filter is inferior to K&N, which is rather doubt they can do. After all, if they clearly were better, OEMs would simply pay the extra couple of bucks and have a huge deal with K&N, especially with power train warranties up to 100k these days. I have trust in the OEM filters, not some after market sold at Walmart next to the magic jacks.
 
FWIW, a couple of my friends saw a nice bump in oil pressure when running K&N filters compared to whatever they were running before. This was on an Evo VIII and a C5 Z06.

all it takes the thread of suit to get your warranty work done.

they have to prove in court that your non oem oil filter caused whatever problem it is to void your warranty.

that being said, my warranty'd car uses the OEM filter, but its all I can get.

I agree and would hate to have it come to that.

I'm guessing there are more people who don't know their rights and get steamrolled on something like this.

This has been fairly recently (within the last year) on the filter I cut open. They definitely switched manufacturers and the one I opened had typical fram style cardboard innards. It was no champion based filter.
