Looking to pickup a Malm bed frame from Ikea. Haven't decided on a queen sized mattress yet, not sure if it's better to choose from The Brick, Costco, Sears, The Bay, Leons, Sleep Country, or go with something from Ikea.

I know I'd like something that's relatively firm.

What are some of the more well known and respectable brands you guys can recommend? Budget is to not go over $900 for mattress.

Any experiences or opinions with the Sultan Heggedal?

Thanks in advance.

Are you dead set on a traditional inner spring mattress?

Have you considered a memory foam? If you live in a really warm climate or tend to sleep warm, you may want to consider a memory foam with gel topper.

CostCo.com has quite a few in your price range but you'll have to wait for shipping. Read the reviews (some are softer) and look at the density (higher the better), we chose a memory foam mattress that is firm and it's perfect even for my light weight wife.

Their beds are too low to the floor. Thats my only problem with Ikea.

I have a bed from them in Virginia, I went to home depot and bought some wood and build a small stage in my room and set the bed on top of it.

I am familiar with memory foam as my "bed" at the moment only consists of a 3" memory foam. I quite enjoy sleeping in it, can get into deep sleeps, aside from the fact in the summer time it tends to be a bit warm. The gel topper helps a lot to keep things cool during summer?

The price is quite reasonable and win reach, I'll see if I can find a model somewhere at a store to try out. Thanks.

don't do it. the neighbors upstairs were sleeping and it broke on them... they're not a big couple at all... well, the boyfriend kinda is... the girlfriend is not whatsoever. anyways, i've never had a bed break on me... the fact that the bed upstairs broke on them, regardless of what was going on it in, makes me not want to buy an ikea bed ever.

by the way, the guy upstairs has some background in home contractor work. i highly doubt it was put together improperly.

I second the memory foam recommendation. I did research/ price shopped and ended u with a top of the line Simmons nxg mattress. I love it. No boxspring (which can save you hundreds when buying) too. I will never own another traditional innerspring mattress again.

I just replaced my 12+ year old traditional mattress/box spring combo with an 8" memory foam mattress. Oddly enough, I bought my mattress from Aldi (yes - the cheap food grocery store!) for $199. It is a "Sensorpedic" branded mattress manufactured by a company called "Soft tex". A little digging uncovered that they make lots of mattresses and memory foam products for many retailers and big box B&M stores under various names. Quality is VERY good for something so inexpensive.

Since I ditched the boxspring, I needed a higher platform bed frame. I found what I think is the best, strongest, and most durable one on the market: The Felix Forever Foundation.

At $339 for a queen it isn't the cheapest solution, but powder-coated steel makes this thing the LAST frame I'll likely ever buy. It assembled so easily (they have spring-loaded button snaps in many of the frame pieces - like tent poles) that in the unlikely event I need to move it it will take minutes to dissassemble/re-assemble. For under $600 I got n entire new bed / mattress combo

I have both a Hopen and a Malm bed from Ikea, bought them off of craigslist just to get something in my house. There are TONS of Ikea beds on CL, at least around here. They are typical Ikea veneer, so the finish won't hold up, but I like the style and they are sturdy enough. I don't really see how it could fall apart. The Malm style night stands don't sit at the exact same level as the bed because they don't sink into the carpet as much as the bed. The Hopen headboard could be stronger. But whatever, Ikea is not meant to be family heirloom furniture. I just like their styling.

Don't know much about Ikea mattresses, I bought mine from The Original Mattress Factory. They're an independent east coast retailer that still makes mattresses you can actually flip. The mattress industry is full of a HUGE amount of bullshit marketing. It's really ridiculous. http://www.slate.com/articles/life/shopping/2000/11/going_to_the_mattresses.single.html

My two biggest pet peaves are the "no flip" mattress (they only have to make one side of the mattress instead of two, but guess what, the price is the same!), and the pillow tops. The pillowtop is retarded, it is simply a $75 topper you can buy on Amazon that is permanently sewn onto the mattress. Now you're stuck with it, you can't change it if you don't like it or it wears out.

Do this instead. Buy a cheap, firm mattress for 300-400. Go to Amazon and look at their pillow tops. Buy 3 or 4 of them for maybe 200-300 bucks. Try the ones you like in your actual bedroom while you actually sleep, return or throw out the ones you don't, and you have the perfect mattress for $500.

People here love to tell you "You spend a third of your life sleeping, spend the money on a good mattress." You know who else loves that thought process? Mattress salesman.

If you get a Malm bed get the high version so you have space for under bed storage.

I wouldn't bet on that...

There's a chance that, as a "professional", he felt that he "knew better" and didn't follow instructions to a "T". Daddy's like that.

On the otherhand, I know people who've had Ikea stuff fall apart on them. I also know that one is a clutz and probably screwed up putting it together and has siblings that come over treating her things like shit (bed jumping...), and the other is a brute who treats his things way too rough.

I have a Malm

It has done an exceptional job (beyond what I expected).

keep in mind I'm 6'1", 250lbs and have 4 kids. Wife and I get down on daily basis.

Side Metal rails might get lose, but all you have to do is redrill new holes and screw it back in. It happened once in my 6+ years of ownership.

Finish has also held up VERY well (still looks like new). I have the Beech color (light tan)

We've had the Ikea Malm King for about 6 years now. About a year ago the middle support bar broke from the wood "particle board" base. About 6 months ago my side of the bed's support gave way(broke off from the particle board again). It's currently being held up by a stack of books. Now I'm a bigger guy (6'3 225) and my wife is pretty small (5"9 140) but it lasted pretty good for about 5 years. Now it's just falling apart.

Just remember that ikea beds are a different size to "normal" beds, and you will need to get an "ikea size" mattress, unless you are buying the mattress from ikea.

My twin Ikea bedframe fit my old non-Ikea twin mattress fine. Depends on model?

I have a king sized malm, I use just a matress with no box spring, with a "slatted bed brace".

The slatted bed brace has been a bit of a problem, but it's our fault- when we moved a year ago we lost a few of the fasteners, so nothing holds the pieces of wood exactly in place- they shift over a few inches and fall out of place.

After a few months of frustration with this, I got the idea to get some flat pieces of cardboard and simply create a small layer of cardboard between the bed brace and the mattress. I glued the card board onto the bed brace so the slats can't move and haven't had a problem since then.

Overall, I love Ikea. Sure, they cut a few corners, but i'm willing to work a little bit to maintain a $200 bed rather than buying one from a real furniture store for $1000.v It also allows me to change my room setup more often. If I buy a $2000 piece of furniture I pretty much have to keep it for 10 years+ to make it worthwhile, but I can replace a $100 ikea table after a year without feeling so bad.

http://www.ikeahackers.net/ is also a fun site for getting ideas.

My buddy has a bed (mattress and frame) from Ikea and as far as I know, he's pleased with it. He's also a big guy and it hasn't broke on him yet, nor has he mentioned it being flimsy or anything.
