Opinions on college degree program...

Hello everyone,

I am currently employed in the GIS (geographic information systems)[/url] field and am looking at my options to finish college. I finished about half of my degree but decided to work fulltime instead. Now I'm going to do both.. lol. Anyway, I was looking around at the local universities and found this degree program: http://www.stedwards.edu/newc/pace/csm/index.htm

This would be great for me because all the courses are in the evenings or on weekends. I also like how you learn about a broad spectrum of subjects, from programming to database administration. I would like to integrate the knowledge I would gain from this degree with my current GIS experience, and work in Network Administration or Database Administration for a GIS office.

What do you guys think? Does this degree program look pretty good to you? I would like to have some opinions from people who are actually in the field.

Insofar as GIS goes, we just received access to a new system here at work. I work in property assessment so I'm looking at maps quite a bit and it is one of the handiest tools I have ever used. Now my lazy ass doesn't even have to rise from my desk to view a parcel or property and a good deal more info than there is on the old hard copy maps. So from that standpoint, I can say with some confidence that GIS would be a booming field to get into.

The expertise is in big demand in this area... local municipalities are all getting onboard too. Network admin / DB admin experience you just can't go wrong with anymore. Hell if I had that, I'd probably try to get into our IT dept. Best of luck btw... & welcome to the forums!

99% of the degrees through online universities do not say "online" on diploma, nor would it be in your resume. If i took an online program at Arizona State University, no one would know i completed it online.
 
Just to clarify, my degree program is not online. It's at a physical university here in Austin.

the St Eds program is fine. a lot of people here do it and i've only heard good things. the only drawback is that it is a little expensive.

You're right, it's VERY expensive! $532.00 per credit HOUR!
 
except at a state school.. they're typically lower in price..

That price seems to be about the going rate these days for most of the programs I've looked at... Just got done paying 6k for 12 credit hours myself.
