Opinions on choice of monitor (LCD/CRT) please!

I have decided on a good 19" CRT for about $300...but I noticed that a 17" LCD monitor that I hear on here is good is $485 with free shipping on Newegg. HITACHI CML174SXW 17 Inch LCD MONITOR - RETAIL is what the monitor is. I am a measly $185 off from it...do you guys think I should just hold out longer and wait for more money? I am an unemployed college student but I hope to fix that soon (tough finding jobs). I play a lot of games, and so that 16ms response time is a big help.

I prefer a good LCD for gaming. Much easier on my eyes and brain (that is, of course, assuming that I have a brain).

With LCDs you're limited to 60fps given the bottleneck of the DVI interface, you can't get a full 32-bits worth of color, a fixed resolution is forced on you and there are pixel response rate issues. However, they look absolutely fab for displaying text and non-moving imagery.

LCDs are getting better but CRTs still rule for games and are getting cheaper as LCDs get cheaper.

Wow, a lot of valid points there. So I should probably stick to my current route of buying a 19" CRT then? I'm getting that NEC FE991SB instead then. I think since my monitor is ailing and hurting my eyes I should probably replace it as soon as possible and not wait any longer. That, and I really don't know when i'll actually find an open position :p

Edit: My main worries with getting a 17" LCD was the fixed resolution.

LCDs don't have a fixed resolution, it's just that most (but not all) LCD's don't render resolutions other than the one they are spec'd for very well.
You are not locked to 60 fps with an LCD.
Many newer LCDs display games very well, though not as well as a CRT. If eyestrain is an issue they are worth checking out.

Ardan.. no it's a matter of opinion. I prefer LCD gaming- the image is much sharper and clearer. While it's true CRTs have better color, it's not enough to matter in games, imho (as opposed to graphics arts work, for example). With a DVI signal & LCD, I found I can snipe insane distance, as every pixel is perfect.

If you spend hours reading text on the screen, LCD is much better. My tired eyes and headaches went away when I made the switch.

Again, opinions vary a lot. The best thing to do is see both in action and decide for yourself.

Well I should have edited that. I didn't really mean fixed resolution...what worried me the most was how it did at different resolutions, like say if I wanted to play Battlefield: 1942 at 1024x768 instead of going at 5fps at 1280x1024 but I never saw any go down to 1024x768 so I really had no idea if it was an issue. I, too, would prefer LCD gaming because I have used many LCDs and they are SO much better than CRTs.

Eyestrain is definitely an issue as well...I have scrutinized CRTs that I might get to make sure they are as easy on the eyes as possible. I would prefer an LCD, but they are out of my range and there tends to be a sense of urgency with the need for a new monitor now too. I really don't concern myself with color...its simply whether it has issues of ghosting/streaking, has good color, and a fast response time and how well it does going down from its "native" resolution.

I saw a 17" LCD from NEC on Newegg for $403 (a special)...is that one better than the Hitachi that i've had in mind? The Hitachi is a CM174SX or something like that (I could look up the model, but i'm lazy right now and it sounds like quite a few people in these forums have it), and it is $489 or $499 (again, no shipping charge).

If I do settle for a 19" Flat-Screen CRT, is the NEC FE991SB good enough? I would like to get it out that I would prefer an LCD and if people can give clear reasons to wait a while longer til I have some more cash in my accounts to buy one, I would appreciate it :D

For gaming, the Hitachi that you mentioned rules.
I have the same model, and its the best TFT out imo, and despite what people say, is more than capible in all areas, including gaming. You wont regret getting it if you do.
The resolution aint fixed. On that particular TFT, you cant go above 1280x1024, but anything under it goes, image quality doesnt suffer much on the Hitachi either.

...including having a wide color gamut, compared to a good quality CRT? Didn't think so.

I don't have anything against LCDs, and think they're great for programming / web dev / gaming (if they have a fast enough response time, as your Hitachi does), but the graphic arts area is not one of their strengths.

While not as good as a CRT for art design, most people would not notice the difference.

...because most of the people here (excluding a few good photoshop'ers) have had an experience with Photoshop that goes something like this: download a warez copy from a p2p service, install it, open up a sample low-res image in it, marvel at all the fancy icons, close it, never use it again. ;)

Good point there.
I remember loading up adobe photodeluxe ages ago, it came with my camera, used it for a hour or so, then uninstalled it. Prefered MS Paint. lol

I have used graphics with some LCDs and I didn't find it to be so horrible. LCDs are getting better with coloring, you know.
If I get a job that I might get very soon, then I will re-evaluate my options and check out some LCD screens as well. However I still bank on a 19" CRT regardless of the fact that I want reduced eyestrain and to reduce the space used by the monitor. If I were to spell out my intentions, I think most people would say to get an LCD screen. This is because I demand a good screen that doesn't hurt my very sensitive eyes (it has to do with a condition I was born with)...and while I do some heavy gaming and some graphics...if the color isn't much different I really won't care. I have seen a Samsung 17" LCD used on an Alienware machine at a store and I really thought it was better than on CRTs.

I have to admit that I have a color issue with my LCD. Gaming is great, but I work with images for web publishing and colors look different on my LCD than they do on CRTs.

It is really noticable? What model of who's LCD do you have, pelikan? Hmmm, maybe I *should* stick with a CRT choice. What do you guys feel about the NEC FE991SB (Yes, I know they have lines and no, they don't bother me)?

No comparison to a _good_ quality flat CRT (Trinitron, Diamondtron etc). Hopefully they will continue improving over the next
several years.

My LCD is not a newer one. It's a ViewSonic VE150, a little more than a year old. I think you should go look at some new LCD's before you make up your mind, so you can see for yourself.
The reason I bought an LCD in the first place was I went to a store and stared at the CRTs and LCDs for awhile and my eyes felt much better in front of an LCD. I still much prefer LCDs even though mine has a color problem.
Also, after hours in front of a CRT I feel "fried," just like from a TV. An LCD doens't do that.

Quite true, pelikan. I was hoping it wasn't new, because some new ones i've seen are quite amazing :)...I know what you mean by saying you feel 'fried' afterwards and thats the main reason I would get an LCD.

Agreed, yet I own a CRT, lol.
