Opinions On Blair's Congressional Address

Hi,

Anyone else notice the not-so-subtle suggestion for more multi-lateral body (UN etc) involvement in future conflicts, rebuilding, etc. in Blair's congress speech? Winning hearts and minds? That was the best part IMHO. You can link to the official transcript here.

It is not the coalition that determines the mission but the mission, the coalition. I agree. But let us start preferring a coalition and acting alone if we have to; not the other way round.

True, winning wars is not easier that way.

But winning the peace is.

I want to be very plain. This terrorism will not be defeated without peace in the Middle East between Israel and Palestine. Here it is that the poison is incubated. Here it is that the extremist is able to confuse in the mind of a frighteningly large number of people, the case for a Palestinian state and the destruction of Israel; and to translate this moreover into a battle between East and West; Muslim, Jew and Christian.

But frankly, we need to go beyond Kyoto. Science and technology is the way. Climate change, deforestation and the voracious drain on natural resources cannot be ignored. Unchecked, these forces will hinder the economic development of the most vulnerable nations first, and ultimately, all nations. We must show the world that we are willing to step up to these challenges around the world and in our own backyard.

If this seems a long way from the threat of terror and WMD it is only to say again that the world's security cannot be protected without the world's heart being won.

So: America must listen as well as lead. But don't ever apologise for your values.

Despite the lack of explanation for the failure of British intelligence, and the assumption that no WMD will actually be ok - because it shouldn't be looked on as a big thing 😕 - not too bad a a speech, especially on those things I've quoted. It could have been worse, at least it wasn't a complete pandering/smugfest effort - it had *some* content that justified his presence and the expense of him being there.

Cheers,

Andy

he's weaseling out of all the previous claims and justifications. him and george needed to meet to get their stories on the same page. he got the medal for being george's bvtch. they both were on tv looking pretty desperate for someone, anyone, to believe in them. i used to really admire tony and follow him, but this medal to him just knocked him right out of the ballpark of respect. hopefully great britains will wise up and not allow tony back in their country. he can stay in the white house's east wing and be there for george in his 'times of need' at night... ;-)~!

Well... I was inspired by Mr. Blair's chat with Congress.. I'll overlook his Englishness and rely on his Liberal approach... but, if he lied no Churchillian rhetoric can make a cow a goose..

He was brought over here to speak for Bush because on the really really important topics it's hard for Cheney to lip sink Bush's to the text by moving them with a hand up his ass. Everybody listens to the wierd accent and not to the content of the words. Blair, in other words, is a good liar. This could all be so easily cleared up if he would simply show us the other neclear evidence he had. The no show on that is what tells you it's a lie. He and Bush wouldn't eat all this crap if they had real evidence to refute it I don't care how secret the source. BS has a bad habit of leaving a smell.

Thankfully Blair didn't; somehow Bush renegged it; I guess he knew Blair would be seen as his bvtch and would be ridiculed at home. Not that Blair isn't having a tough time of it already; I think Blair will fall, and Bush won't be able to escape falling thereafter.

Comparing Tony Blair's speech, today, before Congress, with anything said by George Bush Jr does a wonderful job of highlighting how functionally inarticulate and illiterate the President is. However, neither man said anything to improve their credibility regarding the validity of their stated reasons for going to war.

I agree that Saddam is an evil man, and removing him could easily be defended. I do not accept the idea that such goals justify our President lying, either directly, or through diversion and omission, to persuade the American people that it should be done.

The first statement out of Blair's mouth was to thank the Congress for the Gold Medal... Is he lying here too...?
Perhaps you mean Bush didn't give Blair the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

ahhh i guess congress gave him some other one as a consolation prize; i swear yesterday someone said he was getting the congressional medal of honor, the one winston churchill won, which was totally very rare for a non american to receive.

You mean to say you didn't feel an overwhelming sense of American Pride as Blair rendered moot the question of lies, whys and puddin pies... He is good at what he does and all but the most ardent detractors of the Bush mobile must have been inspired to forgive, forget and vegetate...
The joint news conference held with Bush after the Congressional tea... was most illuminating... as Bush fumbled along with his deft mannerisms and ill jointed splainspeak. When Britian sees the footage of this episode of the Beverly Hillbilly's they will see they'd better keep Blair... Better n two bushes in the bird... so to speak..

Medals seem easy to come by, just go along with the lie?

Well I guess you could try a hunger strike.... but, who'd care.... not about you personally, but, you the symbol of the opposition.... the Bobby Sands of Georgetown..

Blair speaking to the US Congress means about as much to me as Bush speaking to British Parliment. He and Bush are still trying to save face after being caught in fabricatuions that started the first preimptive war we have ever started. All based on a lie. The UK can take care of Blair. The US will take care of King George II.

I thought it was nice to see a Head of State who could speak coherent English. God knows we don?t have one.

Our head of state is the queen last time i checked, would you like Bush to speak like that??
would be amusing i guess. 🙂

I think the Gold Medal that Tony was awarded was for placing first in the Javelin Catch.
God knows that Bush has been throwing everything, hoping something would stick.

I didn't feel nutten cause I truned off his speech. Yuck!

MB says,

I didn't feel nutten cause I truned off his speech. Yuck!

So it would be fair to say his speech turned you off... 😀 or would have had you not taken the affirmative action to not allow him to control the situation... I like the way he speaks... reminds me of years ago... when I first learned how good some folks could say nothing but use it as the basis for supporting argument on an underlying premise that is false.. Sorta like seeing a table float because the legs are missing and asking the question ... "How does this float?" and the response is.... "What matters is the usage of the table not the missing legs" Oh.... Huh?

🙂

somebody needs to put the transcript of his speech in laymens terms. I think i have a decent vocabulary but I couldnt seem to find any substance in what he was saying. In other words it smelled like the british version of Bullsh1t.
