What do you have now?

Does your revision of motherboard support that CPU?

Why are you stuck? You could sell that mobo for decent cash.

A $399 9590 is a terribad deal. At stock it's alright, but hugely inefficient. OC ceiling is pretty low (mainly because it's already OC from the box for all practical purposes).

Sell mobo for $120. + $399 that you would normally pay for 9590 = $520.

$130 Asrock Fatality Z87 + $340 4770K + $35 212 Evo = $495. Run it at 4.2 to 4.4, easily have better performance than 90% of situations, along with :

Dramatically lower power use
Dramatically lower heat output (radiator output)
Much better Intel native Sata3 and USB3 Performance
PCI Express 3.0
Better memory performance (up to DDR3-3000!)
Yadda yadda

If you do insist on going with the FX series, don't waste the cash on a 9590, just get a 8320 or 8350 and run it in the low to mid 4Ghz range with a good air cooler. 90% of the 9590 performance at a ton less power/heat/expensive/stupidity.

I'd hate to run a 220W CPU right out of the box and I used to be a huge AMD CPU fan...

Arkaign pretty much covered it all. Particularly the lower power use and heat output which means more OCing potential with Intel.

I really can't grasp why you are stuck with AMD if you never dealt with them before in your entire life

Hey hey hey!

There's nothing stupid about the 9590. The local power company here has one that they use to stress test their transformers.

I know they are using it when the lights dim and there's a faint aroma of ozone in the air.

I'd say the FX 9370 is a better buy. With a bump of the multiplier or two you'll nearly identical performance and save $110. What CPU do you have now?

Imho $90 saved on CPU will improve the system overall if applied to :

Getting an SSD if no SSD
Getting a better SSD if SSD
Getting a better GPU
etc etc :D

Yeah, but why 9370 when 8350 is about $100 cheaper and still hits those speeds (or 95%)?

http://www.anandtech.com/show/6396/the-vishera-review-amd-fx8350-fx8320-fx6300-and-fx4300-tested/8

And the 8320 is only $159.99. Without knowing what the OP is coming from or what he plans to do with the computer, it is hard to make a suggestion or comment on whether the FX 9590 is a good buy for him.

But you do get the better liquid cooler and a factory 10% higher clock with the FX 9370, which may be worth it to some.

*edit - For the record I agree the 8350 (or maybe 8320) is probably the best buy of the AMD eight core FX CPU's.

That's all true. When the price gets very far past the $200 mark, my value alarm starting blanging.

I feel the same way about things like the 4960X lol :) Just silliness.

AMD FX-9590 Vishera 4.7GHz Socket AM3+ 220W Eight-Core Desktop Processor - Black Edition FD9590FHHKWOX with Liquid Cooling Kit

I'm thinking of getting that to plop in my GIGABYTE 990FXA-UD3 motherboard. Anyone have any opinions on it? Or the price? I've literally never delt with AMD in my life, so anything could help...

PS- And yes, I am kinda stuck with AMD instead of Intel. So an i7 is not an option.

Do you have an high end old Cpu cooler you can use..??

Because this is 100$ cheaper
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113347

And it gets even better if you live by a Microcenter that carries Fx 9590
http://www.microcenter.com/product/423307/FX_9590_Black_Edition_47GHz_Eight-Core_Socket_AM3_Boxed_Processor

Although unless you are a die hard AMD fan, 9590 makes no sense over 9370.

You could probably get a 8350 or 8320, but your chances of hitting 5.0Ghz are unknown.

Or you could just go Haswell way. Although dont expect an i7 4.4Ghz on air with anything excepting the dual tower solutions like the Noctua NH-D14.

8320, pocket the $150 difference and live with it being one or two multipliers slower at max OC

I would only buy the FX9590 if i was a collector, didnt care about spending that money and/or for LN2 usage.

FX9370 with WC kit at 289,99 is a much better buy and FX8320 even better.

$100 difference between the 8350 and 9370? Unless I am misinterpreting your statement, it's $20.

http://www.microcenter.com/site/products/amd_bundles.aspx

9370 is $199
8350 is $179

Not everyone (not even most people) have access to Micro Center, and they don't honor those prices for online ordering.

Check Newegg and Amazon and Tiger Direct and basically every online or store retailer other than MC in-store specials.

Still not $100, On amazon I see the FX-9370 for $240.00, 8350 for $199 ($41)
Tiger direct has them FX-9370 for $249.99 and the 8350 for $199.99 ($50)

I don't see $100 difference, $50 at most.

I don't have access to MC either, but it doesn't mean they aren't sold for that price difference.

The one you SHOULDN'T price check is Newegg. They tend to price gouge.

But just for giggles, Newegg is the same as TigerDirect. $249.99 to $199.99

The ones we're talking about on Newegg (linked by OP to these series of chips) are the 9590 (and consequently the 9370) that include the WC kits.

The cheaper 9370s like this one on Amazon : http://www.amazon.com/AMD-FD9370FHHK...words=9370+amd

" Does not include heatsink fan. "

Do not include the WaterCooling kit. It's also $249, unless you count the random vendors who are really hit or miss. Amazon fulfilled is the only way to go for anything of legitimate value.

And all of those 8350 prices are for ones that include the CPU heatsink/fan :

Not apples/oranges. For the 9370 about the cheapest you can get by with is a CM 212+ Evo, and even that is pushing things a bit.

Retail 9370 on Newegg (with cooler that will cool it at stock)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819113352

$289

Retail 8350 on Newegg (with cooler that will cool it at stock)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819113284

$199

You have to do apples/apples when pricing.

Non-store vendors like non-amazon fulfilled, random Ebay people, craigslist = interesting, but not really applicable unless someone is comfortable with that situation.

In-store specials like those at MC, awesome to mention, but only useful to those in reasonable distance.

Tray/bare CPU vs. retail packed CPUs (especially when we're talking about needing to cool a 220W CPU that's notorious for actually putting out MORE than that on stock settings) .. not apples/apples.

From newegg

FX8350 = $200 + $85 for WC = $285

FX9370 with WC = $290

For $5 more you get higher clocked CPU.

FX8350 AirCooled = $200

FX9370 = $250 + Hyper T4 $30.00 = 280.00

Air Cooled both the difference is $80.00

Yep :)

Both will perform pretty good, but imho that $80 difference or almost 2/3rd could buy a better GPU, better SSD (or add a 128G SSD to a system without one). The difference between a 4Ghz FX and a 5Ghz FX isn't that gigantic, and they run pretty efficiently in the 4Ghz range honestly, whereas 4.5+ they really start to get out of hand, and by 5Ghz are quite literally insane.

Plus the fact that when you're talking ~$300 CPUs, well. It's hard to really advise not just going for a 4770K at that point. An $100 or less mobo will run a 4770K like a boss. Running a 220W and beyond FX chip doesn't go so well on a $100 mobo.

yeap, for air cooled the FX8320 is the best buy. Just OC to 4.2GHz with Turbo off and 1.38v and you are done.
Then if you want WC, FX8320 + WC will cost you 160 + 85 = $245. That setup will OC to 4.6GHz easily with a $100 motherboard like the ASUS M5A97 R2.0.
The FX9370 with WC kit at $290.00 is a viable recommendation only for someone that really want to try 5GHz(+) OCs for only $40-50 more than FX8320 + WC.

Although I really would advise spending a few more bucks and skipping the TX4 :

New_Microsoft_Office_Power_Point_Presentation.jpg

That's on an Athlon X4 (OC'd to 3.6Ghz at the end there for stress testing).

I know the 212 is even pushing it a bit for air cooling the 9370.

100%. The 8320 is something of a bargain, and the bonus is that it can run on quite a few mobos that aren't that expensive either.

If it means the difference between affording a GTX650 and a GTX760, or a 7790 vs. a 7870/etc .. well I'd think that for a gamer, the slightly slower CPU + better GPU is a better deal any time.

Eg : 4770K + GTX650 vs. 8320 + GTX760 = 8320 is going to be the better gamer 90% of the time.
