I'm buying a notebook soon. It's for advanced educational uses (graduate school) and will have do the typical word processing/Internet stuff plus a little more. Right now, the Dell i4000 seems like the best balance between features, portability, and price (especially with the specials right now). The system I'm looking at is as follows:

P-3 900 MHz
14.1" SXGA+ TFT
64MB SDRAM DIMM x2
10 GB Ultra ATA HD
Internal 56K + 10/100 Mini-PCI Combo
59 WHr Li-Ion Batt
Modular Floppy
Modular CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo
Minimal software
Minimal Warranty

~$2000 at dell4me.com

The only things that I'm willing to go lower on are the SDRAM (since it's cheap right now) and the processor speed, provided it doesn't go below 800 MHz. I'm actually leaning towards a 20 GB HD too.

The two major complaints I've read is that the speaker volume is too low and the build quality is poor. The main advantages: "bang for buck" and weight (7-7.5 lb travel weight depending on who you believe).

If you have this machine, can you please comment on those two disadvantages? Or for you experienced notebook buyers, what other machines should I compare? I don't want to go above $2200. Assuming that the Dell specials didn't exist, that would be the approximate price of the Inspiron I want.

So far, I'm not considering the Inspiron 8000 because of weight. I'm not considering ultraportables because of screen size and hassle of plugging in drives. This is going to be blasphamous on this MB, but I'm very reluctant to consider a Think Pad because it doesn't have a touchpad. I had to use one at work for a few months and I couldn't get used to the pointing stick for the life or me. (Even though I'd only use the touchpad, I really like that Inspirons have both...that's a nice touch.)

What are the comperable notebook models from Gateway, Compaq, Fujitsu, Toshiba, etc. in terms of price, weight, and specs?

Anyways, free shipping from Dell ends at midnight tomorrow, so a quick reply is best. I think $100 off a DVD/CD-RW ends on July 23 too. I hope this is productive...Thanks!

1) if you get the inspiron, it is usually cheaper to the lowest amt of memory you can, and buy an upgrade from crucical\
2) i have an inspiron 8000, and i don't have any problems with speaker volume or build quality - i assume the 4000 would be similar.
although i wouldn't want to watch a movie using the speakers... i don't konw what kind of speaker volume you are expecting/need
3) i really like the dell service

i'm not sure if any of this helps :)

by the way free shipping at crucial ends tonight also

1) I don't know if Dell has recently changed the 4000's or not, but none of the 4000's that I have allow you to "dock" the CDROM and Floppy drive at the same time. If you have the CDROM in the modular bay, you will have to run the floppy off of the parallel cable. Can be a hastle if you need to use both the floppy and CDROM simultaneously.

2) You listed minimal warrant. Bad idea. Laptops have a higher failure rate than desktops, and are also WAAAAAAY more expensive to repair. The warranty is about the last thing you want to skimp on.

3) Have you looked at the Dell refurb outlet?

I priced out this Latitude C600 there.

Thanks for the input. I'll think about the extended warranty. The systems listed here are nice, but they don't have a CD-RW, which is absolutely necessary for my research. Buying one separately would be the difference, so might as well get a new system instead of refurbished.

Any other comments on non-Dell notebooks?

I've looked at other companies, but I've been happy with what Dell offers for the money. They also have been pretty good with support, but their support is starting to slip.

Hey, thanks everyone for replying! You got me into looking at refurbished i4000s and I found one that has better specs than the one I was about to buy new.

P3 1 GHz
14.1 SXGA+ TFT Display
2 x 128 MB SDRAM
20 GB HD
3.5 Floppy
8X DVD
Internal 56K + 10/100 Combo
Xircom CardBus Ethernet II 10/100 PC Card
53 WHr Li-Ion
Win Me (yeah...I know)
Tahoe Blue QuickSnap Color Kit
Leather Carrying Case
3-Year Warranty

$2150 - $300 instant savings = $1850

With that $300 savings, I can get a separate modular CD-RW drive so that it has all the features of the i4000 I was going to buy and then some. It's like as a bonus I get a processor upgrade, RAM upgrade, Xircom PC Card, leather case, and color kit! I'll live with any build-quality issues at that price.

Thanks again for reading this thread. Now I just hope nothing is wrong with the notebook when it gets here!
