And thanks for the replies, jiffylube :)

I don't know, would you? It depends on the features you're looking for.

What screen are you coming from? 17" LCD or CRT? 19"+ CRT?

Personally I owned a 2005fpw a couple years ago; while the quality was excellent, I found the text to be a bit too small at the native 1680X1050 resolution.

Take a good look at 17" and 19" LCD's in stores (they are everywhere). A 20" widescreen is almost the exact height and pixel size as a 17" LCD, just wider. How does text and stuff look to you on a 17" LCD?

Now look at a 19" LCD. A 22" widescreen is almost the exact same height and pixel size as a 19" LCD, just wider.

If the USB hub and ability to scale resolutions on the 2007fpw is more important to you, then get that one. If those are just bonuses but the screen itself is more important, get the 22".

Personally, having owned both (well, the 2005fpw), I like the 22" more, because I'm more comfortable with text on it. It was tiny on the 20" widescreen. The extra 2" is not trivial either, the screen looks a good notch bigger :) .

What's more important to you - size or features?

Actually, the scaling is veeeery important to me. If I buy the 22" Acer only to find out I can't do it properly through the video card drivers, I'd be mad disappointed.

Are the monitors equally good for gaming and video? The Acer is a budget monitor after all...

I'm currently on a 17" CRT at 1152x864.

Only thing that worries me about the Dell is the supposed banding issues and the random panel, I don't want an MVA Samsung :( hehe

Thanks again!

well that makes sense.

19 and 17" screens both have 1024 pixels in height and 20,21 and 22 inch have 1050 in height. the dot pitch of a 22 and 19 are more or less identical, same with 20 and 17. my friend has this monitor from costco and honestly it looked fanstatic.

the newer monitors these days are much much better color wise than just 2-3 years ago. compared to my old 20" planar pl201m (4 year old monitor) which was even an 8bit panel, this monitor blows it away.

Yep. I agree.

I had a Samsung 18" LCD about three years ago and colours looked like crap on it. It was probably an 8-bit panel too! They've come a long way.

---------

Tuareg: re: quality for gaming and video: the Dell should be a bit better since it's an 8-bit screen, but the Acer is VERY solid.

jiffylube1024: Thanks for doing the tests. Sounds like it did pretty well. I feel more confident about recommending this LCD now.

Hey all, here's a semi-noob question from a... well, noob.

As per your discussion above, I've also come to find out, that the "local version" of the Acer 22" does not have DVI - I'm in denmark (actually quite confusing - on the global acer site, for some monitors it is noted that there may not be DVI in the localised versions of the monitors - this is NOT noted for the acer 22"(!))

Anyway, my questions are these:
1) Should I already give up my plans to purchase the non-DVI local version of the acer 22"?
2) Is there a reliable place to buy the non-european DVI version (and is there any reason I shouldn't do this - compatibility issues and so on)?

On a sidenote, the lowest price on the acer 22" in denmark (that I can find) is just below 520$ - here, that's really cheap - but then I see the prizes mentioned in this article and I think why on earth I shouldn't buy a substantially cheaper version, that's better (with DVI) ???(!)

As you can see, I'm full of ? and I really hope you guys can help - thanks a lot in advance, oseven.

I find absolutely not acceptable for Acer to offer this monitor in Europe without DVI.

This is a top product, not entry of the line. I accept also no excuses, as Samsung and other are all offering DVI input, even the cheap Hanns G.

On the other hand, I saw that Samsung is going to sell this one in Europe:
SyncMaster 225BW

It's also 22", 1680x1050 and it has DVI inputs. Perhaps it an alternative for the European guys.

Hmm... at about 580$, that's a very reasonable alternative with DVI... thanks for the tip madellga, I'm gonna follow the thread concerning opinions on this monitor - but I'd still like to hear a little more about my questions (mainly, should I consider buying the non-european version from somewhere?)

Well I am confused....does the ati drivers not allow this monitor to do native on older games?
I know that some WS monitors can do this themselves so from the post this one does not.

SO if I want to play something like diablo II either get an nvidea card or a different monitor?
(I want an 8800 but don't have the money right now)

Bought this with hopes of playing World of Warcraft at 1680x1050... but theblurring in game is horrible. Even though this monitor is rated at 5ms, it is definitely not for gaming. It's going back tomorrow.
=======================================
blurr in WOW ....hell I would hate to see it in a FPS game then

overall this sounds like a monitor that is a little better than the samsung
Samsung 22WS I have seen 3 people call the factory and get a replacement in 2 days.
How is Acer policy on replacements for bad stuck pixels, bad backlite bleed.

They have these at CC but don't know their return/exchange policy...With a 3 yr warranty I am not paying $60 for the extended that covers nothing....and one person said without the extended you won't get any help from CC on replacements for stuck or dead pixels.

ANY info is greatly welcomed

I bought this monitor a week or two ago at Circuit City when it was $299. I play WoW and there is no blurring on mine thru the DVI connection. Detail level at 1680x1050 is excellent. first one I bought had a stuck pixel, I exchanged it with no problem. 2nd one is flawless. These suckers are bright too.

Well, I never did end up getting the AL2216WBD back then I just got the AL2223 and must say I'm quite impressed for what you get for your money. I was heavily debating getting this as a 22" or splurging for a 24" or 26" model. But figured a 24" screen would be more than twice the price for 2 inches and a higher res, it wasn't really worth it. I'll wait till the larger screens drop in price first ;)

I bought mine a few weeks ago @CC. It was $299 and they had a $40 off coupon on some deal sites. I also had a 10% off AAA coupon and the store took both. So I paid $229!

Does anyone knows if dell is still shipping these panels type Philips S-IPS (LM201W01) and LG.Philips S-IPS (LM201U04) either of them in the US. How does Acer AL2216WBD and samsung 204BW compared to dell 2007wfp.
Dell 2007wfp looks nice has pivot, tilt but it will cost me around $380 acer and samsung are much better, is dell really worth the price ?
Right know I am using 17" and colors are ok, I am looking to upgrade to a better/bigger monitor .
