Opinions on Academic version windows xp pro

I am looking to upgrade my daughter's operating system. She has windows 2000...And she is in college. Has anyone used the Academic version of windows xp pro. If so is it the same an a non academic upgrade version? Any drawbacks to using it? Thanks.

Not sure, but check to see if her school provides a copy of WinXP, or offers a discounted rate for it.

There is absolutely NO difference between the academic version and the retail version except for the pricing. Is the OS the only upgrade? If so don't bother as Win 2000 works just fine.

Well........2k works fine but XP is better. I plan on getting a copy through the internet...Not her school as they overcharge for things.

In your position, you would get the best price on an Academic Upgrade version (even if you want to do a complete fresh installation). Newegg.com and mwave.com usually have good prices.

Absolutely no difference at all. I've been using it since XP came out - have upgraded it all along , SP1, Sp2 and all the ones in between. It passes MS muster, and is totally reliable. Thice nice thing is that it does not require any activation at all. 🙂

Shouldn't be any difference than the retail but technically she is supposed stop using it when she's done with school. You should also check her University bookstore for maybe better pricing.

I would go ahead and go with the academic version as Vista is on the horizon and by the time she's done with school, Vista will be tweaked for mass consumption.

You can get XP Pro academic versions (full or upgrade), off ebay at pretty reasonable prices.
If she's just using the PC for surfing and word processing, save yourself some $$ and install Ubuntu or another newb friendly Linux distro.
OpenOffice will deal with the MS documents.

That can be indefinite for faculty and grad students. Some people never seem to stop. 🙂

That's been stated before, but I have yet to see anywhere in the EULA that it's said. There are other notes about when one becomes inelligible, but termination of student status due to graduation isn't one of them.

That's because it's not true. You can continue using it, but it is non-transferable, and I think follows the same licensing as OEM for upgrades (can't tranfer to new hardware)

It's the same thing as the corporate edition/retail edition in that it has the same exact features. The only thing different is the licensing agreement.
