Opinions on a system build for my work place

I work for a Compression/Authoring facility and we are thinking of switching to panasonic authoring software running on PC's and getting rid of our SGI's. We are also thinking of building the systems ourselves...or at least one to test. Here is what we have come up with so far. Most important is obviously internal hd space since dvd layouts eat it up hehe. Not looking to go with an external raid for now. Any opinions are welcome. Thanks.

If you change that motherboard you must also change the memory to DDR2.

Instead of the 4 400 gb drives y not pick up 2 74gb raptors put in to a Raid 0 and then use the other 800 gb of storage?? Also Y the EE and not an Opteron or AMD 64 chip??

Can the mobo run the 4 400's in raid? If it can that would be better for us than going with dual 74's and losing space. Maybe we do need to have an external raid. The big problem is if one of the drive craps out and we aren't running in raid. We would need to swap a drive out. Company is more comfortable with intel and this isn't a gaming rig so I don't see it as a real problem. Do you think the AMD 64/Opteron would be a better performer for this?

Get an AMD X2 based system, it'll outperform anything that Intel can offer. Maybe something like:

MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum
AMD X2 (pick one what fits in your budget, 4200+, 4400+, 4800+)
2GB dual channel Value kit from a favorite brand
MSI x800XL or 6800GT or whatever else
That Silverstone Temjinn case.
Seasonic S-12 600W
Same 4 X 400GB Seagate 7200.8s
Get an Audiophile or an Audigy-based sound card.

An AMD Opteron system will crush whatever Intel can offer up. Especially since the new dual-core Opterons are out and in production so you can have a 4 core system relatively easily and an eight core system if you've got the money.

The External RAID would be better. I believe that the MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum that I suggested supports 0+1 due to nVRAID from the chipset.

It would be best if you go with RAID 5 or 0+1, something with parity data or a full copy of the original.

Money isn't too much of an issue so the opterons sound like a good way to go. I just have to find out if the panasonic authoring software even supports multi-processors. I would imagine it does but you never know. I think we might just go with one 74 gig raptor for the os and installs and use the 6.2 TB raid we currently have hooked up to the SGI. The raid is dual channel so what I am wondering is if we can hook both the sgi and the windows box up to it and give them each like 2 TB partitions to use and have some left over. Does windows only support 2 TB partitions or has that changed?
