Opinions on 96-99 Taurus SHO

There is a guy at work with a 97 SHO, all the other guys always talk smack about the 96-99 Taurus SHO with the 3.4L V8. I'd just like to hear what the people here think.

The second gen is/was not as impressive in performance as the earlier (1st Gen) SHO. I guess compared to other cars it may be Ok...

taurus/sable has always been one of my favorites.

But maybe thats just because I have a 1991 Sable that is running like a dream and has had no major problems over its lifetime. Looks ok (the paint is starting to fade) runs ok (gas pedal isn't as responsive as it once was and tranny sometimes makes you pump the gas to make it downshift) but runs it does, and everything except for the tachometer works.

I know many of you people refer to Ford as 'fix or repair daily' and the like, but for the record, your newer import probably has had more money spent on repairs than my old Sable.

That said, I'd say a V8 version would be awesome. but, make sure it isn't one of the model years that has the big oval shaped consol. That is ugly, and you will nevar evar be able to upgrade your sound system (when I took my Sable into the audio place to get a new CD player, the people were groaning and telling me it would be costly until they realized I had a pre-fugly oval styling Sable).

And THAT said, i would buy the Mercury marauder if I had the $$.

Until that day, though, I will stick with my Sable.

Awesome cars - I'm disappointed that the SHO was discontinued in the 2000-present body style, but I'd scoop up a SHO 2nd-gen if I was in the market for a car like that right now.

There may be a potential problem with the cam sprockets failing on the V-8 SHO. There is currently a class action in the works, IIRC.

Otherwise, its a great performance sedan. Yeah, that's right, its a sedan, not a Mustang or Corvette. There are all sorts of performance goodies available from mild to wild, but they're very expensive because the SHO has more of a cult-enthusiast following and companies cannot reap the economic benefits of mass production.

Its an expensive habit, too rich for my blood.

<--- owned a mildly modded 94 SHO 5-speed

Yea I think a lot of the problems due to teh cam gear on the head coming off or spinning. Even SHO fans have boards setup on this problem.

I like the dual exhaust on the SHO's. I really wish Ford wouldn't have cut costs/corners and put dual exhausts in their gen 4 (2000-present) Tauruses.

I can't see buying one of these when there are much better alternatives out there for very reasonable prices as used cars (the Maxima comes to mind). I have always thought that the 2nd-gen SHO might have the goofiest-looking spoilers in all of autodom.
