Opinions on 6800 Ultra Manufacturers

I'm thinking of purchasing a 6800 Ultra (PCI-E), but am having trouble figuring out which manufacturer to purchase from. All my previous ventures with nVidia have been with Gainward (of which I can find none). Opinions, experiences, links to comparisons, would be greatly appreciated.

Also, I've seen an eVGA model on NewEgg, but have not heard much about eVGA's nVidia cards.

Gainward no longer sells video cards in the US.

BFG, Asus, and Leadtek would be my favorites among the rest.

Gainward was good, but they only had a 1 year warranty, but their cards were usually mad overclockers.

BFG because of the warranty and support. Also, no need to OC it since it comes clocked to 425core anyways (and going any higher won't make much difference).

Then maybe Leadtek because they have a good reputation for making quality cards.

eVGA has a 2 year warranty and is on the up as far as reputation goes, and I think they're nVidia's closest buddy from the manufacturers.

Asus has a 3 year warranty and their cards are good. You usually get a nice bundle, and sometimes they do other stuff to standout.

Gigabyte, MSI, and AOpen all seem to be decent, but I would go with one of the aforementioned companies first (and MSI the most of these three).

I would stay away from XFX and PNY, as they're getting a not so good reputation anymore.

There are a few others that I don't really know much about, like Chaintech, Galaxy, and Pixelview.

From my personal experience I'd go with MSI. I had a MSI GeForce4-Ti4400 AGP 4x that overclocked past Ti4600 speeds (300/325 and my overclock: 330/325) and it was a strong, stable card the whole time I had it. I also have a MSI 16x DVD-ROM and I watch alot of DVD movies on my computer and it still works flawlessly.🙂

I have a MSI K8T Neo that works great too, but I don't know if any of this applies to 6800Us?

Here they are in order:

1) Gainward - Best nVidia VGA maker - the GS is outstanding!! OCs to 450/1200
2) Asus - single and double slot Ultras with stock copper cooling
3) eVGA/BFG - They both have a 6800UE, and I think they use the same BIOs and PCBs
4) MSI
5) Leadtek - clocked lower than the rest @ 400/1100, but still good

I have an eVGA 6800Ultra AGP, and love it. I can overclock it to 440/1180. I'm ordering the copper heatsink off evga.com, and I'm hoping I can get the GPU above 450.

Errr, eVGA, MSI and Asus are all clocked at 400/1100 as well?

Gainward are overpriced and jumped on ATI camp to and all my Chaintechs ran same speeds 450/1200 is easy on a ultra im 425/1100 out box, and BFG is new to me in UK and i read lots of probs with them but good support, but there is prob as many again with no probs, anyhow i only use chaintechs since g force 2 ultra and g forve 4 ti 4600 now on a 6800 u

BFG is the best. EVGA is second. Don't go with ASUS. Their 6800 GT is only a 12 piper even though they claim it is a 16 piper. I don't know about their 6800 Ultra though.

LOL- that makes sense- "Don't buy their Ultras because they have misleading names on their NUs and GTs.

Errr, Noob, their Ultras are all 16 pipeline, 6 VP, 400/1100 cards?

You're even wrong about their GTs:

V9999GE 6800= 6800NU with 256MB of 1GHz DDR3 is what you're thinking of probably, or their 6800GT that is a GT core with NU RAM (128MB 700MHz DDR1). They have a normal GT as well.

When I said I don't know about there 6800 Ultra, I meant that I don't know how good it is. And in terms of the ASUS 6800 GT, I have read an article in PC Gamer and 1 or 2 articles on the internet that clamse the ASUS 6800 GT is only a 12 piper. PC Gamer said "ASUS took the original 6800, replaced its 128mb of DDR Ram and replaced it with 256mb of DDR3 ram, and clocked it to match 6800 GT speeds."

I will find the article and type it out, I might be mixed up.

This article is from the December 2004 Issue of PC Gamer (word for word):

V9999 Gamer Edition

-The Moder Prometheus

Beneath the surface of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is an even darker tale about science run amok - science for the sake of personal golry, science without checks and balances. Asus' new V9999 Gamer Edition GeForce 6800 video card was clearly borne out of that brand of science. It was built not because it should have been, but because the engineers at Asus wanted to prove they could. And now, when faced with their patchwork monstrosity online or at retail, the average gamer is going to be confused. Lucky for you, PC Gamer is here to make your life a little easier. What has Asus done to spark so much ire in TheVede? For starters, they've taken a GeForce 6800 and replaced what would ordinarily be 128MB of DDR1 memory with 256MB of DDR3 memory. They've then up-clocked the board so that it's the same speed (in MHz) as a typical GeForce 6800 GT. That's all wonderful, but on the product box, Asus strongly implies that the V9999 is a 16-pixel-pipe board even though it's really a 12-piper. Those extra four pipes can make a big difference in next gen-games. And considering that you can buy a fully-fledged 16-pipe GeForce 6800 GT for $5 less then the 12-pipe V9999, you'd alsmost have to be mislead to buy the latter. Because the V9999 is so similar to a GeForce 6800 GT in everything except its number of pixel pipes, it's not at all a bad performer. In fact, it's faster in our tests then even ATI's $399 offering, the powerful X800 Pro. But at least no one is claiming that that card's got 16 pipes when it doesn't. Asus makes many terrific video cards and motherboards, but the V9999 proves that just because you can build something, doesn't mean you should. If you're looking for the best, most powerful 3D technology on the market today at $399, get a GeForce 6800 GT. Don't settle for a kludgy hybrid.

PC Gamer Final Verdict 58%

LIke I said, Asus doesn't sell that card as a 6800GT. They sell it as a 6800NU, although with 256MB of 1GHz GDDR3 and a $400 cost, it's by far the best and most expensive 6800NU out there.

V9999GE!!! does it say GT???NO!!!!! So you better don't talk about what you don't know. By the way I own an Asus V9999GT that has [B16pipelines and 6Vertex shaders][/b] and it an excellent piece of hardware, with Ultra's PCB :|

I took the word of a reputable magazine. So I advized against getting the model PC Gamer was talking about, you !@#$ing moron.

Neither say anything about the amount of rendering pipelines. The V9999 Gamers Edition (not the GT) is supposed to be better then the original 6800 GT. But it's not because it only has 12 pipelines. So the V9999GT is better even though it has lower clock speeds. So you would end up getting ripped off if you bought the V9999GE, not the V9999GT.
