My husbands employer is trying to screw him (and not in a nice way). I just wanted to know if anyone here thinks his union will help.

Well this is what happened. My husband is a member of a union, he works in the telecommunitcations field. He was sent to work in NYC, right by ground zero. He told his boss he wasn't sure how to get to the place he needed to be, since it was listed as a no access place. His boss told him not to worry about it, he would have leave his cell phone on, so when he got to the city, he could call him and he would explain in greater detail how to access to the site.

Well my husband left here at 8PM and got to NYC at 11:30, he was sent out of Manhattan three times because of detours. So he called his boss, no answer, he drove around again trying to get in, no luck. He called his boss 4 times, and not once did he answer his phone. He "accidentally" shut the phone off. My husband drove around until 3;30 Am, trying to get into his work site. He finally said F*** it and came home.

Now his boss isn't sure if he will be able to pay him for the day or not, since he actually didn't work. It is not my husbands fault he couldn't get in, and he never would have even attemped it if it wasn't for his boss telling him he would help him get in. He would have made 420.00 for that one night of work, plus his holiday pay for columbus day. Only 3 people out of 12 made it to work on the first night because of his idiot boss.

Can the union help with this?

*** Not only did they pay him for the night he spent driving around, they also paid him for the day he took off!! I'm glad it all worked out, saved me alot of aggrevation. :)

he should get paid for anything work related. It's not his fault that he couldn't get there and get the job done. The boss said he could get him in but couldn't be reached. To me it seems as if the boss dropped the ball on this one. He's just covering for himself.

This is just like working in retail. If there aren't any customers, you are still supposed to be paid regardless of the fact that no revenue was generated that day and that you "really didn't work that day".

I'm no fan of unions, but if his union can't get him his pay he shouldn't pay another penny in union dues. This is a cut-and-dried situation. He followed the directive given to him and is absolutely entitled to be paid. Since 9 of 12 people ended up in the same situation, that should make it easier.

If he's already been told he's not getting paid, let the union handle it for all 9 people.

I agree 100%. Your hubby should be paid without question, and if not, send the union thugs in to break some knee caps (alright, I know not all unions break knee caps...).

That's about the most bogus statement I've heard all day! You'd completely freak out if I described a day in a Truck Driver's Life! LOL!

Surely he is covered by some kind of agreement or contract. How does it effect transportation to or from a job? Often unions have no say so here and are just tolerated for a cheap place to buy benefits.

BTW, I think his boss is a a-hole, but there has got to be details we and maybe you are not aware of.

There is nothing in his union contract that deals with any issue remotely like this one:(
