Opinions needed on laptop upgrade vs repair

I have a powerbook Pismo laptop.. That I paid about $700 for about 1.5 years ago.

I have added a 900 MHz processor upgrade, a 40 gig 5400 Rpm HD, 512 megs of RAM, etc..

basically, about $600 bucks of upgrades..

Now, it really needs a new keyboard, and 2 new batteries to be useful as far as uptime without being plugged in. This is just a secondary system, nothing I use more than 3-4x a week and mostly for recreational purposes. I like to be unplugged and roam around or take it down to coffee house, etc..

Additional parts will run me about $350.

So.. do I add the $350 to the total cost of ownwership, or sell it for like 450, which is about all its worth w/o new parts, and start saving for an IBM X series ?

thoughts? I am trying not to be extravagent and shell out a grand or so for a new laptop, but at the same time I don't want to pour more money on this than it's worth. The thing was $3499 in 2000 btw in case anyone is wondering 😉

For me, it matters on what I'll be doing on the lap top. If you are just using it for MS office, I wouldn't shell out another 1-2 grand for a new lap top. But then again, lap tops likely sell like hot cakes on E bay. You could maybe get more than you want from a buyer here if you announced it's upgrades and the fact it only had one owner.

If you use more demanding programs I would think about investing in another lap top.

I have had it listed on here for awhile with not a whole lot of interest.. The specs are close to the current entry level iBook, but it has way more RAM.. (which isn't at all worthless).

It works great for what I use it for, with the exception of the annoying sticky keys. I don't need it for power apps, I have a screamin' PC for that 😉

<edit> keyboard has one key where the contact is worn out.. so it only intermittently works. The P key sticks but might be able to be replaced w/o having to do whole keyboard. It is extremely easy to replace the keyboard on this model, but the part is 60 bucks (used).

With new notebook, I would have longer battery life / lighter weight. I would go for ultraportable.. either IBM X series, Sony VAIO PCG505 (something like that) or Powerbook 12".. </edit>
