Opinions needed: Do those memory and reading improvement programs really work? Or are they just scams?

If you read a book every month or every so many weeks your memory as well as comprehension is bound to get better.

I remember on reading one that was a scam, the 'example' was that they gave you a test, then flashed you some random 'exercises', and then another test, which was easier than the first. Everybody improved, only because the second test was easlir.

I had to take a speed reading course before dental school and it didn't help at all. yeah I can read dick and jane stories at 1100 wpm but that dosen't help with comprehension at all. Save your money.

I ripped a bunch of self help books off my friends computer and was scanning over them for fun. Every single one nomatter what the topic (Sex, relationships, mediation, money making) only said to use affirmations.... Point being if you see them trying to preach them run... run fast and far.

Like Nocturnal said, the best way to increase reading speed, comphrension, and your vocabulary is to read, and get a decent college dictionary to look up unfamiliar words while you're reading.

Read the newspaper, magazines, even the better-written fiction (especially if you read more than one genre and a variety of authors).

It's not an instant fix, but does pay off in every activity related to reading (including standardized tests) and helps to improve writing skills as well.

A good way to improve memory is to start doing the daily crossword puzzle. The best way to keep the "brain muscle" in shape is to work it out.

Drink one glass of turpentine with dinner every night to improve memory.

Actually, that might have been red wine. I can't remember.

I tried the EyeQ speed reading program. Only did it for a few hours, so don't know in long term, how much it helps. It does appear to help increase your reading speed. So if you're able to increase your reading speed 2x or 3x, you can read the same material over again a few times it took you to read before once. This will most defintely improve your reading comprehension.

I'll say it too: Read! Read books that really expand your understanding of something. If you don't continually challenge yourself, then how the hell are you going to grow?
