I'm trying to weight the relative importance of memory, cpu and graphics card to find the best small notebook that will be used as general laptop but will also be used for some Flash animation production work. I don't want to cheap out but i also don't want to spend more on stuff that won't buy me performance for the tasks at hand. Note, I have high end desktops for more intense editing and graphics heavy work. Here are 3 laptops that have gotten good reviews that i'm considering:

Toshiba Portege R835-P88 13.3" Notebook Computer
2.5GHz Intel Core i5-2450M
Cache L3: 3MB
Memory Type: 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM
Installed: 6GB
Capacity: 8GB
Graphics Card Type: Integrated
Installed: Intel Graphics System Mobile HD with up to 1696MB Shared

versus:

ASUS U36SD-DH51 Laptop Computer - Intel Core i5-2430M 2.4GHz, 4GB DDR3, 640GB HDD, 13.3" NVIDIA GeForce GT 520M

versus (step down to an i3)

ASUS U31SD-DH31 Laptop Computer - Intel Core i3-2330M 2.2GHz, 4GB DDR3, 640GB HDD, 13.3" NVIDIA GeForce GT 520M

thoughts?

Do you know if Flash production is actually GPU accelerated in any meaningful fashion? Video decode in Flash is, but as far as I know the actual rendering side of Flash is done on the CPU.

Get the fastest CPU and most memory that you can. That's pretty much it unless you will be working on enormous projects that have to swap to disk.

My recommendation is to figure out what you'll be stressing (CPU, disk, RAM, or GPU) and then buy accordingly (later). Don't buy until you know why and what you want.

that's the basis for my question. what does flash stress? if folks don't specifically have experience with flash, there's no need to post. if you do and have a sense of where the tradeoffs are between cpu, gpu, ram for FLASH -- i'd love to hear.

This really might be a question better suited for a Flash developer forum. While we can tell you all about hardware, we're not the people that can tell you about Flash. Once you know what Flash will stress we can point you towards the right Ultrabook.

have you considered getting and ivy bridge powered ultrabook? Examples are Ideapad U310, Samsung Series 9, Sony Vaio T series
