I putting together a system using a Dell motherboard (socket 478, 400 Mhz fsb) and I can get either a 1.7 Ghz P4 or a 2.4 Ghz celeron. The machine is going to be used for business tasks and as a secondary/backup to my main system.

What would be the better processor to run? I want to hear what you folks think.

If it's only a backup system, then I would go with whatever is cheaper.

If they are both the same price, then I would go with the Celeron (more GHz).

You seem to forget,I think the P4 1.7ghz was an older Willy cpu thus is not as fast as a Northwood with more cache.

It would be very close. get whatever's cheaper.

if you oc teh P4 so long as it is a northwood it will work over the celly. i have a 1.8 lying around here that just loves 2.0-2.1 area and it is a willamette. it would work over that 2.4 celly if it was a nothwood instead of a willamette.

all celeries over 2ghz Are northwood cores so they should be able to get close to 3ghz.

What planet are you from? GHZ mean squat??? Is that why you have that 2.1 Athlon? Why not just stick with the 1.4 Athlon then?

Besides, Athlons and Celeries aren't even made by the same manufacturer... you're comparing apples to oranges. Intel makes both chips he's considering buying. The GHZ comparison is much more relative to his situation than in your sarcastic 1.4 Athlon comparison.

diversity is good, stupidity is bad! the 1.7P4 will be a willy and the 2.4 will be a nothwood. it is a backup for buisness apps so go with the cheaper. the celly semms better to me but only about $10-$20 better.

GHZ mean squat when talking about celies... a 2.4 ghz celly will beat a 2.0 ghz P4? yeah right...

GHZ don't mean squat you just have to give the celly it's due handicap. and he isn't talkin about 2.0 northwood he is talking about a willy core which is precticaly the same thing(in performance) as the celly northwood core.
