Double Trouble

I have an old (10+ years) rear projection crt tv, a 50" Toshiba 50H81 or something like that. Recently the picture has started flickering every few seconds, like the there's something wrong with the power supply. The colors and everything remain fine, so I don't think the lamps need replaced.

Is this something worth getting diagnosed and/or repaired, or is it pretty much a lost cause to be replaced? I'd prefer to repair it so I can save up for a really good new TV, but if it's gonna cost me $600 or $700 to repair, I might as well just ditch it and get a new one.

Edit: each time it "flickers" for a split second, the picture flickers, but the sound hiccups as well, which makes me think it's a power supply or capacitor issue. In theory that would be good news no?

Thoughts?

Only real way to know is to call around and get quotes. Just call repair services and ask how much it would be. if they say $50 then it might be worth it. If its 200-300 just to come look at it then i'd just go for the new tv.

Could always dig around the internet too and see if its something you can diagnose yourself.

Yeah... it's a big old-style big screen, so it's going to be a big effort to take it somewhere. I'm gonna try to find some repair places to see if I can find out home much it's going to cost just to diagnose the issue.

yep just call around. You might be able to get a good deal, or find its not worth it. I know a few years back a friend had a problem with his big ole rear projection and got a repair guy to come "take a look" for like 30 bucks.
