First forgive me for my ignorance on videos. I have not followed up videos since my last pc 2 years ago.

Now my son complains that the new games are not running smoothly on our pc and I would like to upgrade video card with around $50 if possible. I don't know if this price range is realistic.

I have a ATI XPert 98 8mb, AGP 2x.
Abit BH6 mb.
Cel 566@850
196 mb (pc100)
win98SE

My son plays half-life, drivers, BMX bike, etc.

any suggestion/recommendations?

I'd say, get the Radeon LE from this place for $78 and no shipping cost. It's a little more than what you wanted to pay but this card would shut the kid up for a good year at least 🙂

You can find a TNT2 32MB PCI or AGP card for around $40-50, and it will handle HalfLife pretty well, as well as a lot of other games. However you will probably hear from your son again when he tries to play newer games. I suggest spending around $70-$80 on a 32MB Geforce2 MX card, which will last a lot longer.

Go with the Radeon LE 🙂
It beats the MX in everything! Plus, the MX card has horrible looking 2d. You don't want your son staring at blurry text. That will cost you more in the long run with eye doctor and glasses bills! Stick with the Radeon.
