Opinion poll: AMD DDR vs Intel DDR setup

I am running an AMD 1.2@1.386 on an Asus A7V133..but have considered switiching to a DDR setup in the future..I was wanting to get Palomino Athlon but this seems to be pushed till when??? Oct sometime..

I have seen recently Intel is going to move ahead with a SDRAM/DDR based mobo for the P4 but initially it the DDR will not be supported..In my limited experience working on system..I have had little to no problems with my Intel BX based system even when I do everything stupid imaginable...

My experience with AMD has been good but I had problems getting a V5 to work with the setup and there have been usb and soundcard issues with the SBLive with VIA chipset...

Also the DDR platform still seems a bit immature...the overclocking feature are good on the Epox boards but there is a 5v rail ? and you need to use jumpers not the bios ..but the vcore can be upped over 1.85v, SIS chipset seems to allow more limite overclocking features??

So what would you recommend waiting for an Intel DDR setup probably 6mo?? or AMD DDR setup now..and what mobo would you choose...

Well, right now P4X266 P4 DDR boards are out. Seriously, u need to choose weather you're going to go AMD or Intel. I personally would not recommend going P4 DDR right now, There are going to be a lot of chipsets being released by end of Q1'02. ALi Aladdin-P4, VIA P4X333, 845-D, Sis 645. We are going to see a similar thing of what we are seeing now in AMD chipset market. All of these 4 chipsets support PC2700, except for 845-D. 845-D on the other hand will support PC2100, and it according to Anand has some features that will make it perform very well with DDR. P4X333 is going to be a great product. According to a recent VIA roadmap, P4X333 is going to have an improved V-Link, AGP 8X, but best of all, QDR (Quad Data Rate) support. It will provide at maximum, a whopping 5.4GB/ps of memory bandwidth. 68% more than 850+PC800! I think it may be the platform to have for P4. And IMHO, DDR platforms are very mature. SiS 735 has no ocing features because the only 735 mobo (ECS K7S5A) doesn't have ocing features, if mobo makers like Asus, MSI, etc would make a SiS 735 board, then we'd see 735 ocing, and AMD 760 is a very good ocing chipset. VIA KT266 is bad because once fsb goes above 138MHz, USB kicks out but otherwise I think that DDR platforms are very mature.

Well, I assume u want to overclock right? Well in the next 2 weeks new KT266A boards are going to come out. Asus A7V266-A, EPoX 8KHA+, Abit KR7-RAID, MSI K7T266 Pro2, and others. KT266A is verty high performing, the highest performing Athlon DDR chipset out. I'd choose one of these. For ocing, I think personally that Abit KR7-RAID is going to be the best. Out of current, tried, proven boards, EPoX 8K7A for ocing. For non-ocing, ECS K7S5A is the highest performing. Good luck, any more q's Pm me.
