Opinion please...would another 128 or so megs speed me up?

i do a lot of .wav and .jpg file editing using my PII 400, do you think another 128mb or so would speed me up at all. I'm not talking simple .wav > .mp3, i'm working with 1-2 hr long sets of .wav files and a LOT of cd burning. will the extra mem help or should i go for the faster cpu?

Faster CPU...

Friends' got a P3 733 but has a lot of stuff loaded, after everything is booted, he only has 4MB physical memory left, added another 128 last night and now it has around 132 after win98se booted. So depends on what you have running, but both would be nice..

Assuming you have 128MB already (your question seems to imply it but you don't say it outright) I'd go with the faster CPU first. More RAM would help, but I think that a faster CPU would do more.

Upgrading from 64 to 128 helps a lot, 128 to 256 MB makes the system yet again faster (although less than from 64 to 128). After 265 MB RAM you won't notice much difference if you upgrade the memory again.

You've to decide for yourself, but I would go for more memory.

just this SINGLE reason justisfy upgrade from 128MB to 256MB

Ram will help and is also the cheapest way.
Upgrading proc would be nice, but then you hv to buy a new mboard, maybe drive, etc...
All depends how much money you want to spend.

Well if you want to speed up everything on your PCX then go for a CPU change to another Intel Pentium 2 CPU but with a higher clock speed. if your mobo allows it then you could via the Bios change the mulitplyer settings and boost the power input to the CPU and then by doing this you have overclocked the CPU and your CPU will still be even faster. And for the 128 MB Ram well that will be a good adition if you still have money left over to spare.

Good luck!!

P.S if you over clock your CPU it will producwe more heart so you will need a larger and more heavy duty heatsink and fan to keep everything cool and to prevent a melt down!!

don't know if you thought about getting a 7200rpm hard drive...that'll speed ya up some too. Right now, RAM is soo cheap, I'd upgrade that first, then a 7200rpm drive(you won't believe the difference it makes), and then the processor cause that's the most expensive. Matter of fact, I have 128Mb now and I'm buying another 128 today..plus the 7200rpm drive.

Good luck.

the operating system your using will make a big diffrence as to weather another 128 will help you, if your running win2k it should make a substantial diffrence, under 98 or ME the speed of your ram...ie cas 2 pc133 as oposed to pc 100 or cas 3 ram will make the greatest diffrence. With files that large you are "streaming" data and the speed of your ram will make the greatest diffrence in that situation.

OK, sorry, i should have cleared up a couple points but i was lazy. I'm running w98 on a PII 400, 128mb, soyo 6ba+IV, 7200 rpm ata66 maxtor. i record concerts on my DAT, upload to the pc via cool edit or sound forge and then split those long .wav files and burn them to disc. so the question kinda remains, what would you do to make things faster: cpu, memory or OS? and remember, i'm a new dad w/ VERY little $$ to be playing with.

ps: anyone else trade shows? wanna set up a trade?

Congrats on being a new dad. I know what that's like. I have a 5 month old son. It's great but crazy at the same time. I keep getting the itch to plunk down for the Quantum deal but even as relatively great of a deal as it is ... being a new parent with new financial responsibilities really hits home. I think twice about buying a slurpee now. Jeez ...
