Opinion on x79 Build

After riding out my AMD X6 build as long as I could, I want to take the plunge and move to Ivy Bridge-E and X79. Unfortunately I haven't kept up with hardware(other than videocards) so I feel a little lost. I've put together a preliminary list and I'd like to get some feedback from more knowledgeable members.

Here's where I'm at now, and any and all suggestion or hints would be greatly appreciated. I want to reuse my current SSD/HDD, videocard(OC'd 7970) and PSU(Silverstone Strider 750w) as I think they're still match up with more powerful hardware.

Edit: As for what I'll be using this build for, it's a combination of gaming, ripping and transcoding Blu-Rays to my cobbled together media server, and some video and photo editing. I also try to build higher than I technically need at the time with the hope that it'll age better so I don't have to upgrade as often. I also like to mess around with overclocking and going with IB-E vs Haswell means that I should be able to get decent results without having to delid the CPU as it's using solder.

Only choose X79 if using more than 2 GPU's and you need more ram, else I'd say go Z87 route. O also if you need more than 4 cores then X79 yes.

Also the presence of an onboard Video on the Z87 is also a plus 🙂 Helps troubleshooting, wait time during GPU upgrades etc. Plus if ripping Blu Rays, quick sync works nicely. Also Z87 has native support for Trim for SSD Raids.

The Rampage IV Extreme is 2 years old now. If I were building a new x79 rig I would go for the Asus x79 Deluxe which just came out. It does a much better job at making up for the x79s outdatedness.

I got the same advice on another website and after seeing [H]'s review I went ahead and pulled the trigger. Now if AMD's new card is as good as the rumours say I'll pick up a cheap used 7950 to Crossfire with my current 7970 and I should be set for a good while.
