Opinion on Overclock of Duron 800

I have a Duron 800 running on a MSI K7T Pro 2A. The bridges have been unlocked using the pencil trick. When I change the multiplier to 8.5, everything goes just fine. However, if I try anything higher than 8.5, the system doesn't post. Do you guys think I should retry connecting the bridges using a defogger kit or do I just have a CPU that doesn't overclock as well as the others?

You probably need to up the voltage. If this does not work you may need to do the bridges again. Mine are done in pencil and 950mhz is not a problem. You will need good cooling though. The stock hsf is not that good for overclocking if it is the same hsf as the earlier durons. Get motherboard monitor and check to see what your cpu temp is. It is best to stay in the low 40C's but up to 50C will probably not hurt it.

Yeah, I've tried cranking up the voltage already and still no dice. I've got an FOP32-1 on it. Any other opinions?

Try connecting the bridges again with another pencil for now... No.2 pencil. I used 4 different pencils and only one of them worked... a Dixon Ticonderoga :) But your CPU might be a dud.

What pencil lead did you use?

I had problems when overclocking when using whatever pencil lead happened to be in the disposable mechanical pencil I had initially used. I reapplied using HB lead (much softer) and got better results (600->850@1.85v).

Good luck.

The L1-bridges are connected or they are not connected: There is no middleperformance of half-way. Either you can overclock or you can not, it is not like that you can overclock better if you used a better pencil.

The lead that I use is 2H with extra plumb - for better conductivity.

I guess you have a point. But one pencil I used got me to 800MHz but nothing past that. I went over bridges a few more times and nada. Used the another pencil (the last one) and was able to hit 1GHz. I don't know the specifics but it happened to me and seems a better pencil got me to OC more.

i did manage to get my duron 800 to 1050 (10x105)

i think when i add a blue orb on the northbridge, i can up my fsb a little bit

I've used a regular mechanical pencil to get the following results:

Duron 600 --> 900MHz
Duron 700 --> 1083MHz
TBird 750 --> 927MHz

It might be the MSI K7T mobo.

Apparently the 2a mobos have a multiplier problem -- the multipliers aren't set properly. Anyone know if there's a fix?

I'm getting a Duron 800 w/MSI K7T 2a next week and am hoping that I won't have the problem, but I'm not sure if I'll be lucky. It looks like it's a problem with all the 2a boards.

Update:

I reconnected my bridges this weekend using a defogger kit. Now my Duron runs at 1007 mhz. That's more like it!

Thanks for everyone's input.

Its a kit you can but at your local auto parts store that is intended to repair breaks in your rear window defogger. Its made by loctite and comes in a small bottle. It dries fast so make sure you have some nail polish remover handy if you make a mistake.

I used 6 different pencils to no avail. Then i retryed the conductive pen and everything worked fine. I had the same exact problem as you. You just need to keep trying to connect the bridges. If you still cant get the multiplier past 8.5 successfully, then that means you haven't connected them well.

Conductive pen works very well, but the one i have spits out too much ink which would cover 2 bridges at once so i had to spit out the ink on paper and then use a toothpick to connect the bridges. It was a definite pain in the As$ but well worth it. I am now running on 9.5 multiplier setting.

I have the exact same settings and problems as the one starting this post.

And I figure from what others have told, that it may be problems regarding the homewritten L1-bridges...

Am I really forced to buy a defrogger kit if I want to overclock past 900 MHz?

getting a defogger kit or conductive pen will be your best bet. pencil will either wear out or not work to begin with.

The site i bought my Alpha PAL 6035 from is Plycon.com. They also have the GlobalWin Fop32-1 and fop38 and the copper hedgehog heatsinks. They let you choose the fan for the Alpha heatsink, i chose the Sunon 23cfm fan, but i could have gotten the Delta fan which is used on the FOP38 which would cool much better, but produce a lot more noise.
