Alright I work over at Best Buy, and as you guys know we are selling MSN, with $400 instant rebates on all products over at Best Buy (purchase must exceed $400) I have never personally used MSN, I use a cable modem. However, I want to hear from people what they really and honestly think of MSN. Good or Bad, reminder that this MSN is 21.95 a month, which is maybe a tid bit more then average, considering there is free internet, however those free internets are banner ridden and plagued with busy numbers. (I know banners can be taken out through tweaking) just want you guys opinions. Thank you

Why would you want it if you already have cable? I was a former MSN member, I think it's a great ISP, it's probably the biggest ISP that is infamous because not many people use them. They're usually very fast, never ever gotten a busy signal in the 3 years I've been with them, and they're always problem free. A great ISP that not many people know of.

but you have cable?

after the service and rebate considerations, duh, you do the math.

msn is probably going to be like any national ISP, there are going to be some with good and bad experiences. besides, MSN is not doing too well in terms of membership counts and popularity and stuff. there is talk that MSN will go free.

Infamous what do you mean, they are the second largest isp in the world but aol still has three times the membership as msn, there are a awfull alot of fools out there. I have had MSN since it started in 95. I get my access from my cable company but still keep my msn access just for the access # in Asia and Europe and have no trouble connecting in Asia using thier roaming # to get email access on my laptop when traveling overseas.I really like the 400$ rebate. You can quit anytime without obligation they just prorate the loan and you just payback the prorated amount with out interest. They also give the biggest amount of webspace than any national isp. I feel that Worldshare.net is the best isp for the money out there. A 10$ donation and a fast questionaire every month gets you a unlimated access with unlimited email accounts without that annoying adverstising java aplet.

I think free provider are pretty good except that I have problem
with email and newsmail don't seem to work too well strange.
MSN is expensive 21.95
Rebate is good for someone who don't have any free provider to begin
with it a start then you can quit and use free after that.
I mean if all go free how do they make money then?
pretty good deal if you ask me, I mean you pay 240 worth of internet services and that same amount is deducted from the total cost of
your purchases?

sigh...I remember AOL chatrooms back before AOL was "AOL"

"Dad...what on earth is that big thing next to the computer?"

"It's a 2400-baud modem son."

Raincity: They're infamous in many ways. Not many people know Microsoft is an internet service provider. While they know the likes of Earthlink, MindSpring and Prodigy. MSN gets blasted by many magazines when they do an ISP roundup. Sure enough, they're large now, but if you rewind back to 1996-1997, NOBODY KNEW THEM! People ask me which ISP I use, I told them MSN, and they said "MS what?" It also gets overshadowed by the likes of AOL and AT&T. The poor ISP was doing an exccelent job and nobody recognize them, I just feel sorry for MSN. Their software, I have to admit, is the best looking, and most flexible among all ISPs. No ads, no auto disconnects, no restrictions, no nothing!

Also, if you are a Costco member, you can get unlimited access for $11.97 a month.

I hate MSN. A few years ago we tried them, and I got busy signals very often, and it was slow. Plus the software that came with it was junk (but that was three years ago need I remind you).

I am never, ever going back to a 'large' ISP as long as I can stay local.

According to PC Mag they are among the 4 worst ISPs. I would rather pay less for a better ISP. Right now, I am using Earthlink and I love it.

See, thats why MSN is infamouse, or notorious. People tried them long time ago when they were junk, today's MSN is totally different and it will blow everyone away. Magazines blast MSN for I dont know what reason, they seem to be a great ISP and they get bad feedbacks. I just couldnt understand it.

I kinda agree with Lxi but its been my experiance that the folks that never heard of MSN are the ones who think that AOL is the internet. I have had people who got confused when you give out your email addresse because there was not a @aol on the addresse. I am waiting for the day for PC mag to do a objective review of anything. They should stick to what they know best rehashing the same articles over and over on 1000 windows secrets you must know and how to improve your website or the infamous how to network your home pc"s 101 pushing the Linksys home network kit for the last year. 21.95$ is a good price when you do the math and take acount for the 400$ rebate bring down the actual cost to 10.83 a month. If you can find any isp local or national that offer unlimitid use with as many international access # that work and 20 megs of web storage I would love to hear about it. MSN is a winner, so buy it.

They really are top-notch. I live in the middle of nowhere and have five dial-up numbers local to me. That's pretty amazing. Customer support is excellent, always replying withing 24 hours. Very little downtime (like once every six months for a few hours). They are by far the best in my area and I've tried many of them; AOL (everybody has to start somewhere), MSN, Prodigy, Compuserve, local ones too. The only downside is that they seem to slowly heading the way of AOL; simplifying and forcing stuff that you don't need. I tried the new preview browser a while ago and noticed an eerie similarity to the cuteness of AOL. Stipping away fundamental options just to make things simpler. Hopefully that won't ever be the standard.

Rain: Fully agree, I was very happy to see MSN teaming up with BestBuy, so many people get to use this great ISP that they dont know of or dont know much about. No matter how bad MSN is, it's still way better than those AOL crap.

I'm in a fairly unique position here seeing as I worked for their Customer Service department for a few months. Here's what I would recommend to your customers; Find someone else. MSN's service has alot of problems (or did 1.5 years ago) that were related to them, even though we blamed the internet for the troubles.

When you're in training, they actually use LIVE customer accounts to show trainee's how to do certain procedures. It was sickening. The poor guy's account that my training class was shown had over 40 "mistakes" logged in his comments from trainee's messing around with his account. Hell, 6 times he was cancelled and had to call!

This is not good business. One thing to note: if you call and have a half way legitimate problem, ASK for a free month and 90% of the time the CSR will give it to you to keep their talk times low.

Also note: MSN's tech support is not toll free. That was a huge complaint when I was there.

I would recommend you do some research in your area, but with this $400 rebate their using, I know my region is experiencing higher than normal busy signals for MSN dialup due to the number of new subscribers.

Granted, all this information is dated, but in my experience, companies this large don't change their ways to drastically. Also note: MSN's customer service is outsourced to MCI WorldComm(whom I was an employee of).

I would consider a different ISP. I have used Earthlink in the past before I went to cable) and had nothing but good experiences with them. Their tech department was on the phone with me at 4am EST one night for nearly an hour trying to get a POS winmodem configured properly that was conflicting with a hard drive (don't ask :p). Anyway, those are my thoughts about MSN ;) Take em as you will..

No No Im sticking with cable no doubt, but Im an honest sales person, I want to give true testimonies to my customers. I do not EVER want to BS my customers EVER. I want to always give them the truth, and I always do, I tell them I use cable when they ask what I personally use, and I tell them I love it, however, I also do tell them that it is very expensive to set up ($300 is about the only avail. price for cable modems in our area), why I started this post, is becuase I just want to hear from you guys on what you think, I don't want to sell crap to my customers, honestly this may sound cheesy, but I want my customers to go home happy, and I don't want them to be in the hurt bag for money, thats why this MSN sounds like a great deal and I tell the customers that. I mean if you do that math that you save $400 dollars from your 21.95 account for 36 months (3 year contract) your only paying $10.83 a month for internet service after you do that match ( also for you guys wondering how I got that I did it this way, I took 21.95 x 36 = 790.20 took that - 400, which = 390.2 divided that over 36, and came to 10.83) I really appreciate your guys input.

Yes I do work at Best Buy However I was a tech for another store for awhile. So I guess it makes me immune or something. At Best Buy not only am I #1 sales in MSN contracts now, but the important thing not a day goes by I don't see a customer I Helped out and they have to stop by to get some accesorie or a CD or something at the store, and they dont stop by the computer department to thank me. Honestly Best Buy is a good store we do what we can, understand we are a corporation we may have higher prices but we have huge huge huge payments to make torwards inventory, employees, and everything I know what our wholesale price is for our items and some are marked up a bit, but so is every other retail store, and Best Buy gets a lot of crap for customer service, well I been to ta lot of retail stores and I got great service as a customer at Best Buy, we seriously try everything we can do. One thing I do know that people like to bash on Best Buy a lot is on the knowledge of our staff members in the PCSOHO department Sales, sure I will admit some of our staff are not CISCO/A+/MSCSE certified techs, but you know what the every day customer wants? A nice guy who can talk to them and make them feel safe, Best Buy cant afford to hire absolutely every salesman to be a certified tech to sell computers, I myself consider myself to be very knowledgable (not to the extent of some members here but I was a tech...) and I do fine at Best Buy, all I gotta say is to everyone here next time you go to best buy, cut the guys a break, if the salesperson doesnt know about the L2 cache divider on the old Slot A Athlons, or the what the GPU/Ramdac is clocked at on the Geforce 2 GTS cards, give him some slack, hes just trying to earn a buck. Thats all I ask
