I'm upgrading my old computer with a new MB, CPU, Memory, Video card. I already have a brand new ATI 9700 Pro i just bought at CC this weekend. The MB & Memory I have picked are:

Albatron "KX18D Pro" nForce2 Ultra 400 Chipset
Kingmax 184 Pin 512MB DDR PC-3500 - OEM

What I need opinions on are should I just get a retail XP-2500 and oc to 2.2-2.3, or should i get a XP mobile 2600 and oc to 2.5-2.6. If I get the XP mobile i will need a HS/fan. I would say I'm a moderate gamer (mostly BF1942) and internet use. Do you think the extra $35-$40 cost is worth the 200-300 MHz increase?

yes. 200-300mhz is like 600mhz compared to intel. clockspeed for clockspeed, amd owns intel. i say go wtih the mobile.

I have had great luck with my Barton 2500, but got an early stepping before the lock. If I were buying now, I would go with the mobile version and a decent HS/F. Good luck with your build!

it just means that the mobile will do better. the mobile has far more potential then the normal 2500+

Go for a 35 wt 2200-2400...as even they will out perform the current Bartons, be unlocked, and run cooler.

Edit- Going Mobile...beep beep (ala The Who)

You are being far too optimistic....
