Finally found someone to buy my XT.

Now. Which is the wiser choice?

From a post on POTN

LOOKING TO SELL OR TRADE MY
CANON 40D PLUS 2 BATTERIES, CHARGER, MANUAL, STRAP, NO BOX
18-55IS LENS AND BOX AND PAPERS
50MM F1.8MK2 LENS AND BOX AND PAPERS
2GB SANDISK CF CARD
4GB SANDISK CF CARD

40D HAS 32223 ACTUATIONS AS PER EOSINFO.
18-55IS IS APPROX 18 MONTHS OLD. CAME AS PACKAGE WITH XSI
50MM F1.8MK2 IS 6 MONTHS OLD.

BOTH LENS WORK FLAWLESSLY. 40D IS NEAR MINT WITH A MINOR SCUFF ON BOTTOM. BOUGHT IT USED FROM A FRIEND. WOULD LIKE TO KEEP IT ALL TOGETHER AS A PACKAGE.

ASKING $725 CANADIAN . PAYPAL. I PAY THE FEES. YOU PAY ACTUAL SHIPPING.

TRADES CONSIDERED: CANON G11 +CASH ON YOUR PART
ANY OF THE MICRO 4/3 CAMERAS
PANASONIC LX3 PLUS CASH
ANY LARGER SENSOR P&S

OR MAKE ME AN OFFER.

THANKS

Or this deal on eBay ---> LINK

I would sell the Sigma lens I would get on ebay. Less than $100 I'm sure.

Or I would sell the 18-55mm IS or My Tamron 17-50mm and keep the other and the 50mm. That would put a 50mm and 85mm and a good walk around lens in my bag. But, then the super low shutter count on the ebay deal sways me back every time!

Are you in Canada? If so, the POTN camera is probably the better choice since the seller is in Canada so you won't have to pay import/export fees. Also, the eBay link says that the seller will not ship to Canada.

I'm in the US. The seller on POTN will ship to US but didn't say anything about adding the fees.

I guess I'm spoiled. After having a VGA LCD on the back of my DSLR for the last two years, the thought of using an SLR without one makes me want to gouge my eyes out. T2i has a 1 million pixel LCD, versus 230k pixel LCD on the 40D. Auto-ISO and Live View are much better implemented in the T2i (the 40D doesn't even have contrast-detect AF). The 40D doesn't have Digic 4 (which means no ALO, HTP, vignette-correction, etc.); max selectable ISO is 2 stops slower than the T2i. The T2i also has Canon's new 63-zone meter. Those are only the photographic improvements I can think of off the top of my head; you're obviously not interested in movies otherwise the 40D wouldn't even make the cut.

Do you shoot sports a lot? I'm trying to figure out where the extra 2fps in a 40D might come in handy.

Sports or moving subjects yes. Also the build. 40D is Magesium alloy. The controls as well. Also, the price compared to a new T2i? Not to mention I'm getting lenses with these 2 deals. Anyways, that wasn't my question. I've already decided which model on want. So far no one has really contributed to this thread.

God wh y don't you post this on some more forums. :D

Check my post on AR

e: copied so everyone else can see:
Neither, find a plain 40D body so you won't have to worry about an extra lens. Don't buy crap lenses that you know you won't use.

Here's one for $600
http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=834536

$640 with a good L bracket

$550...incredible price

However, if you want to skip the hassle of paypal and message boards, just get this one from KEH:

KEH is a great site. I just bought a 30D on KEH for $349 a few days ago. Gonna be weird going between 35mm and APS-C, but it opens up my lens options a bit.

True steve. But even getting the 50mm f/1.8 and the 18-55mm IS and reselling both would I not come ahead? Or keep the 50mm anyway since I do want one. lol.

Also Pentaprism VF, 1/8000 max shutter, 9 focus point cross-type, sRAW. Just more of what I'm looking for. Don't need that much more of an LCD screen to offset the other features of the 40D.

True. Hmm I kinda already told the guy I'd buy it. But, he's yet to reply to my PM's from about 6 hours ago. I've had a lot of people lately send PM's and request quick replies. I reply immediately, and they take hours. So, who knows. I could use a 50 again. I really like that lens. Either way, I will have a 40D within a week or so. :)

Lol sRAW isn't really a feature...why would you want to shoot a 40D at 2.5 megapixels?

True. I probably wouldn't use it. But, I'm just listing differences. I still don't want a T2i or any entry level DSLR. I don't care if the T2i can clean my house too.

I'm surprised prices haven't fallen more on the 40D; I remember paying $600 for a used one almost 2 years ago. I wasn't impressed at all so I promptly sold it about a month later.

One way to look at it: would you rather have a Rebel XTi in a pro-sumer body (40D), or a 7D in a consumer body (T2i)? Unless you're shooting a lot of sports (in which case you would be better served with buying a 70-200L instead of a newer body).

Don't worry, I'm not trying to sway you. Just playing devil's advocate like I usually do.

I don't know about test. I mean, my XT could pull off better results with that ISO test. Either that 7D sucked or they didn't know what they were doing.

As a 40D owner myself, I can attest that the 7D is at least 1 stop better noise-wise compared to the 40D. At ISO 3200, the 40D is usable, but it doesn't look too pretty and you really have to nail the exposure to get decent results at ISO 3200. One of my friends got a 7D recently and the ISO 3200 shots look better than the ISO 1600 shots coming out of my 40D. The T2i is supposed to have about the same ISO performance as the 7D, so it is definitely miles ahead of the XT (which in itself is worse than the 40D).

Ergonomics-wise, though, the 40D is no doubt superior to the T2i. I use a 40D for personal shooting and a Nikon D300 at work shooting gigapixel panoramas, and I much prefer the layout of the 40D over the more expensive D300.
