Opinion crosspost

looks good to me, although i've never heard of "silverstone" power supply units. i would stick with enermax personally as they've never given me any problems. also keep in mind that right now is a horrible time to be buying a 9800 pro...can't you wait just one more month? it will double or triple your performance.

I second the enermax ps. Don't go with brands you never heard of no one refunds you when the ps burns out and takes your mobo with it. Adding a processor to that list would be good too... Since it's budget I wouldn't RAID the drive one Raptor is plenty fast. I'd ditch the uber nice cooler(stick with retail hsf) and get some higher quality ram although I do own that hsf and it is sweet looking...

Damn, knew I forget stuff when I cut and pasted. I did choose a processor: standard Athlon 64 3200+, 1 MB cache. That should also be 2 sticks of 512 for a total of a GB. As for the PS, I've talked to a few people and they say they run extremely quiet, which is one of the goals of this system.

oh give me a break...you would take a chance frying your system because the psu is quiet??? have you ever heard an enermax?? they are dead silent!!!

you don't have to listen to our opinions, but when you fry your motherboard/cpu, you might feel rather silly for ignoring us. i've fried one generic psu and that was enough for me. the athlon64 is a power hog, along with a high end graphics card. the cheapo psu's "say" they're 350watt or whatever, but in reality they're 180watt or something rediculous.

I've been building and working around machines for a *long* time (decades) and I've never fried a PSU. I think it really depends how hard you're working your components. I don't overclock unless I have to ("have to" dictates a need to overclock because the performance isn't satisfactory). The parts that I'm choosing for my machine will be more than powerful enough for what I intend to do with it, so I don't need to overclock.

As for the particular PSU, I have no qualms going for an Enermax or something similar. The goal, like I said, is to have a stable, quiet system, and I've been told (by more than a few people) that this one will do the job. If I stick with the basics (Radeon 9800 Pro, 2 hard drives, 3200+ Athlon, etc.) I won't even approach the limits of the first power supply I've chosen.

Ok, final consecutive post (wish Anandtech would let you delete posts).

Here's my current hardware list. I can do nothing about the Radeon 9800 Pro: I already bought and am using it. It'll be fine for my needs. If someone can point me towards "higher quality" memory, I'd appreciate it. Also, will the cooling be sufficient enough on this thing?
