Funny, I was pretty much the same way. I had BWP for probably two to three years before I really started to pick up on the subtleties that makes them so amazing.

It's funny, because I don't think there's anything subtle about Akerfeldt's writing abilities! For whatever reason, it seems like typical metalheads have a hard time picking up on how good Opeth/Akerfeldt is. In my case, most of my music loving, non-metalhead friends pick up on how good Akerfeldt is (as a musician and composer/writer) much faster. Seems a bit backwards...

My favorite band used to be In Flames until I got into Opeth. I actually have a hard time listening to other metal bands now because of how good Opeth is. Much pickier now...

It's not really Akerfeldt alone, as much as it was Mendez and Lopez (at the time 🙁), that really made them better than the rest.

My music tastes are all over the board but Opeth, at least their older stuff, is in a whole different league.

In Flames was good, but anything beyond Clayman from them is just terrible.

Actually, now that I think about it a lot if not all of the older Melo-Death Swedish bands that were top shit in the late 90s to 2000s, all kinda aren't that good anymore. Or at least, they're well beyond their peak.

Right, I understand it's not ALL Akerfeldt, but it is mostly him. He has a very distinct/unique writing/musical style that permeates all of Opeth's works in one way or another. Then again, I don't really think their new and old stuff are directly comparable. Watershed was kind of a bridge between their "classic" sound (anything up to and including Ghost Reveries) and their new sound, which I suspect will change again for the next album.

I actually think Heritage has some of the best music Opeth has ever put out. It's different, sure, but oh so good. Their classic style was getting stagnant, IMO. The band took an entirely different turn and still put out an incredible album. Sound changes are rarely kind to bands, but Opeth took it in stride I think.

Well, that's my opinion, at least. There's something about the way Akerfeldt write and plays that just resonates with me.
