I've become a fan of Opeth by listening to their awesome album Blackwater Park. Which Opeth album or albums do you recommend I buy next? (yes, I buy CD's)

Blackwater Park is indeed an epically awesome album. I remember very fondly when it first came out.

I got hooked on them the first time I heard Morningrise. I was a Jr or Sr in High School, and it was like nothing I had ever heard before. I've probably listened to the album 1000 times since then, and it never ceases to fascinate me.

Morningrise is my recomendation. It is the most "Opethy" Opeth album IMO.

Addendum:
If you can get "The Candlelight Years" box set cheaper than the price of Orchid, Morningrise, and My Arms, Your Hearse individually, then you may wish to consider that.

Both Orchid and My Arms, Your Hearse are very very good albums as well IMO.

Morningrise for the earlier death metal type sound, Deliverance and BWP are my favorites for their mid-way sound followed by Ghost Reveries as their most cohesive/pinnacle of their sound. It went sharply downhill after that for me (unpopular opinion).

The new one is an awesome 70s prog rock album if you dont consider it's Opeth when you listen to it.. otherwise it's sort of a mindless wandering bore.

I'll have to disagree with Morningrise being the next pick. Still Life will always be my favorite of theirs by far.

Still life is indeed awesome :)
I think Morningrise is my favorite mostly because it's the first that I've heard of them, and the one I've listened to the most. But, to me, the gap between Morningrise, Blackwater Park, and Still life is very very narrow....

The music is not bad....until the "singer" starts yelling. Then you can't understand a damn thing and it sounds horrible.

The song "The Drapery Falls" is great - it shows that they can make something without yelling...well almost because there is some yelling in it and it ruins an otherwise good song.

we get it, you don't like metal, go away.

and opeth's singer rarely if ever yells. at least get your terminology right.

I think "Ghost Reveries" is the most polished version of their "classic" sound. Wonderful album. I also love "Watershed", though many people dismiss it because it is a departure from their older style. It's definitely a weird album, but it's really quite good.

Out of their pre-"Ghost Reveries" albums, I think "Blackwater Park" is their best all-rounder, though I absolutely love songs from anything from "Still Life" through "Damnation" (never have been able to get into their first two albums).

"Heritage" just leaked, and it MIGHT be Akerfeldt's best work yet. Yeah, it's not metal, but it's awesome. It can be chill, heavy, intense, fun, or any combination of those (and more). Very diverse song selection. It takes a few listens to "get", but once you do, it's amazing. Akerfeldt has always said this is the type of album he's wanted to write since he was 19, and you can tell by listening to it. It definitely has a 70s prog rock, jazz, and...well, Opeth vibe to it. Haters are gonna hate it, but if you appreciate music, you'll like this. Sometimes bands change their sound. Musicians get bored writing the same stuff over and over, and I'm happy to support their desire to play something different. Sometimes it doesn't always work out well, but "Heritage" is absolutely fantastic.

It comes out on the 20th, by the way. I recommend you buy that next. It might be beneficial to listen to "Ghost Reveries", "Watershed", and then "Heritage" in that order (listen to them each enough times to really "get" them before moving on). It makes more sense if you listen to the progression of sound, though I do think almost anyone could get into "Heritage".

Love them, not a fan of their latest album. It's neither solemn like Blackwater Park or power-churning like Ghost Reveries.

wtf he yells and screams all the fucking time. When he actually sings it sounds pretty good.
