Operon 280 system freezes or restarts when I---->

...ok first I am running a brand spanking new 2xDual Opteron 280 system, 4GB RAM. WINXP64.
Currently the vendor has temporarily put a GeForce 6600 card (will be replaced with a GeForce 7800 512Mb card in a week or so when it becomes available in this country).

I uninstalled the latest GeForce 88.xx drivers and installed driver version 77.77 as the Maya (3d software) interface was getting messed up...things are relatively better since installing 77.77 drivers.

BUT I am having a small problem. I am rendering some images for print at 5500 x 5500 pixels. The render goes like a dream and I can easily save the rendered image...BUT then if I move the finished rendered image which is in the Maya "Render window"...zoom in zoom out...etc etc...the PC either a) freezes (no control/alt/delete possible OR b) restarts.

Any idea on what could be causing this? The cooling is rock solid as it never crashes under full load. Could the GeForce drivers be causing this? What is it about moving the huge rendered image in Maya "render view" window that is causing the system to restart /crash?

Btw I can open the saved rendered image in Photoshop without any problem and play as much as I want.
Any advice? Thanks

First suggestion is to go to Control Panel->System->Advanced->Startup and Recovery, and uncheck "Automatically Restart" under "System Failure." That should stop the PC from rebooting, and display a blue screen error that will identify the module that is faulting. I'm thinking it will be nvdisp.dll or a related module.

I would also look in the Event Manager under System Events and see if there is anything in there about a system error, or an infinite loop error in the driver.

It sure sounds like a driver problem to me.

OK I unchecked the "Auto Restart". I have managed to crash it 3 more times but it frooze and no blue screen.
I looked at "System Events" and I saw few errors (red circle with a white cross) but they make no sense to me or if they are connected to this :-(

Ok I just crashed it again when I moved a window to the second monitor. In the event log the "errors" when clicked on say-

* \sysRoot<sysWow64\Drovers\SENTINEL.SYS has been blocked from loading due to incompatibility with the system...

* The machine-default permission settings do not grant local activation permission for the COM server with CLISD {xyz.......} to the user NT AUTHORITY\LOCAL SERVICE SID { S-1-xyz} This second permission can be modified using the component services admisnistrive tool

* The Sentinel service failed to start due to the following error; This driver has been blocked from loading

I am not sure if any of these have any relevance to my problem.
What are sentinel drivers?

OK I got the blue screen erro and it was -

PAGE FAULT IN NON PAGE AREA

nv4_disp.dll

So it must be the Nvidia drivers right?

Yeah, it is either the drivers or the hardware, but you have a lot of other issues too. All those errors in services and DCOM on startup are bad news. Something is major league unstable, but I can't help much unless you want to go through and post the contents of those events so we can see what modules are faulting. I don't know much about the 64 bit version of XP, but others here do.

Edit: check this out...

Thanks but there is no "Sentinel" entry in my---> Show hidden device+Device type. The PDF nicely explains what to do but it just ain't there.

The only blue screens I got where from the "nv4_disp.dll"...the others where system freezes directly connected to it or unconnected... I don't know.
Note- Each freesze/crash happened when I moved my 3d software windows. So I still feel all the problems are related to the video card/drivers.

Anyway all the errors in the system log are these. I think 2 of them are related to the mouse and keyboard which works fine even though under "Device manager" it has a yellow "?". Everytime I install my wacom serial tablet it says hardware not found even though it works fine (has WinXP64 drivers). If I uninstall my wacom tablet the "'?" under device manager for mouse and keyboard goes away.

Yeah, I am assuming there is no sentinel.sys because it is not getting loaded. Anyway, I think you need to flush those errors out. Hard to say what is causing what at this point. The nvidia driver problem could simply be a bug. Do you have the latest release?
