Operating system installation order

I am probably going to try to redo one of my computers this weekend and add a distribution of Linux (Ubuntu) O/S to the machine (currently just Windows 2000).

Which O/S should I install first, Windows or Linux or is it six of one and a half a dozen of another ?

Thanks.

Windows then Linux. If you do it the other way Windows will overwrite your Linux boot loader.

Edit: Also, you can install Ubuntu alongside your existing Windows 2000 install. When you install Ubuntu there's an option to manually set the partioning. Do that and resize your existing Windows partition to make space for your Linux partition. I've read that you should do a defrag before doing this as well but I'm not positive that it's required. Can't hurt though.

That's what I thought, but just wanted to ask.

Going to re-install everything, since I have only a small portion of my drive partitioned for Windows and I want to have access/partition the entire drive when I put both O/S on.

Thanks.
