Operating system for a P166MHZ system with 16MB of ram

what kind or ram does it use? and how many slots? I have lots of 32M edo dimms common in pentium class machines, and a ton of 200mmx a few of wich are unlocked so run 233 fine.

I was able to get a smilar system running just fine with Win98.
DON'T install any software that leaves crap in the startup. You may have to simplify your desktop settings to run smoothly.
Dont even consider Win95. If you cant work with Windows 98, just go to:
www.distrowatch.com ,
and look for Linux versions designed to run on old hardware.
