Browser maker Opera plans to introduce an iPhone version of its Mini browser to the App Store next week, promising "six times faster download speeds" and "10 times smaller data traffic" than with mobile Safari. Now all that remains is, well, approval.
Those speed and bandwidth boosts most likely come from the server-side compression that Mini incorporates, though that could be a blessing for international travelers faced with monstrous roaming data fees. No word yet on which way Apple will go on Opera Mini—they've previously let a few in before, but mostly from smaller-name firms that piggback off Safari's own rendering engine.
Mini, on the other hand, has its own full-page rendering engine, and features like tabbed browsing, Speed Dial, desktop syncing, and much more. It would be great to see Apple allow some browser innovation into the iPhone, but we can't say we'd bet on it.

Hard to say. Apple would normally insta-ban it because it's better than Safari, but AT&T would like something like this a lot so Apple might allow it because of that.

Used Mini on the Droid and was not impressed.

Although compared to Safari, I'm sure its a huge improvement.

Safari is the best mobile browser that I've used, but not much experience on the Droid end. Maybe Opera could open up a route towards Flash ...

I'd be surprised if Apple didn't approve this app because it competed with Safari. Surely they've been watching what Microsoft's been going through with the EU. They'd be treading on thin ice if they didn't approve it on a basis other than it being buggy or some other technical problems.

I have an iPhone, and play with the Droid from time to time, as many co workers now have one. Safari wins, IMO, because of the zoom thing. I didn't care for Opera on the desktop, so I doubt I'll try this.

Oh this'll be good. If Safari is superior then it shouldn't be a concern for Apple anyway.

In my experience on WinMo, Opera Mobile >>>> Opera Mini, and on Android, default Webkit browser >> Opera Mini. If Safari > Android Browser, then Safari >>> Opera Mini.

So....meh? Unless they've improved it.

Opera mini is a good browser for other non awesome phones. Non smartphones basically. It does a decent job even on S60 that I use it from time to time. Much smaller footprint than Opera mobile.

Zoom thing? Dolphin browser on the Droid has pinch zoom, as does Opera Mini.

For the Droid, i would rate Dolphin >> Default >> Opera Mini.
