Nintendo just dropped the price of the Wii Opera browser in Japan and PAL markets to nothing, its original "price" during the system's launch, when the browser was in beta. VOOKS photographed the Wii message that announced the price drop, which also revealed that the version of Flash used in the Wii browser has been updated from Flash 7 to Flash Lite 3.1-- which should make the Internet Channel much more useful. Users who paid 500 Wii Points for the browser will receive a refund of sorts in October -- a credit that can be used on any NES game.

Yay, free NES game that I'll never play for being a chump and buying the Internet Channel that I never use!

Nintendo finally realize that everyone is giving away their browser for free on consoles (okay, well, except for MS, the "leader" in web browser technology, who doesn't feel the need to add a browser to their console)?

In all fairness to MS, Sony's browsers are about as useful as tits on a bull.

I don't know if it's just youtube being laggy or what right now but youtube seems to be significantly worse with the new browser.

Funny that they make it free, considering the first month or two it was out it was free. Maybe that was just beta stages or something, but my friend got it without paying for it when the Wii first came out it, then I went to download it when I got my Wii and saw it was 500 points. Screw that. I'll save $5 and use the laptop that's 10 feet away instead.

Updated Flash will be nice. I never bought it, so I'll look forward to playing with the browser a bit.

Sweet.

Flash lite? So hopefully web pages work well with it.

All the browser needs is the option to use an SD card as a cache.

I kind of figured an update was coming, since the DSi Opera got one. (pages load allot faster)

So yeah cool.

Time to play & see what flash lite offers?

New browser seems to be about the same with streaming local media via orb/play-on..

What sucks is I can only get the local files to work via play-on. The netflix, hulu, espn, etc streaming doesn't work.. It starts to load, and locks up.. Did this on both versions of the browser, but I haven't had time to futz around with it yet.

Ok, I spoke too soon. New browser seems to have broken streaming.. It works for a little bit, then gives an Out of Memory Error.

Even if they put Internet Explorer on the 360, I'd be afraid to use it. :Q

They said all along that it would only be free for 6 months. Instead, it was free a bit longer.

I can watch stuff on Netflix, though I have to pause it on occasion. I don't know if it buffers or anything like that, but it seems to help.

Hulu didn't really work earlier, but I think it's a playon/hulu thing rather than a Wii thing.

How do you get local media through playon? It's set up to work on the Xbox, but I don't see a PC icon or anything like that.

edit: I bookmarked the wrong page on the Wii browser. Oops.

Are you using the older wii browser ? Seems like the new one broke functionality for quite a few people, so if you haven't already downloaded it I would wait.

Supposed to be a playon patch out today to fix it..

playon/opera issues

Well, shoot. I just downloaded the new browser. Let's see what happens...

edit: So far, Hulu is working. I just paused it for a few minutes to let it buffer (if that's what is actually going on).

Netflix seems to be broken. ESPN works fine.

Well, that's nice. But what about the NTSC markets other than Japan (eg USA, Canada, Mexico, etc.)?

Update: The Internet Channel is now free in North America, and the NES Virtual Console download credit will be extended to those who purchased the browser in the region.

Their product serves a purpose. It'd be a lot harder to, say, "sell" Firefox on the DS. Unlike Safari and IE, it's on the market for commercial application to a buyer's platform. As for their MS complaint to the EU about bundling IE... they are a browser company. They aren't the first to complain, hence, the earlier anti-trust trials in the US. Like Netscape before them, they are a rival commercial browser software company with their own future at stake. What official stance do you expect them to make? Netscape was right about IE... it did somewhat "spell their doom," but at least Firefox was born of it.

Did you try the local media ?

That, and netflix is all they use on ours, and those are the two things seemingly not working.
Still waiting for the patch.

Local media works fine for me. Haven't retried netflix yet.
