Opera Browser a no-go in Ubuntu

I frequently check in on Opera to see how the browser is faring, but I can't seem to get any version to work correctly in Ubuntu 8.10.

The problem seems that whenever I go to a web page, there is a 10-30 second wait until Opera connects and begins transferring. Every web page I tried does the same thing. I don't think it's loading in the background or anything, it's just not doing anything (noticeable) for up to half a minute.

It almost sounds like a DNS issue or something, but when I installed Opera 9 onto my Vista VirtualBox inside of my 8.10, it ran just fine. And every other browser I've tried works without this issue.

Not a big deal, but kind of a mystery to me...

If any one is curious, I seem to have resolved this. FireFox just keeps spiking a full core to 100% for minutes at a time, even when on a pure text page, and is relatively slow to respond on occasion, so I tried a few things to cure my Opera woes.

I'm not sure which did it, but I disabled ipv6 completely from my OS, as well as added my ISP's DNS servers to my /etc/resolv.conf file, before my default router 192.168.0.1.

I did both off these and rebooted and it now looks like Opera is my browser of choice.. for now. Nice and quick to connect and load.

Funny, I was actually going to come in and mention the /etc/resolv.conf file because I sometimes have a similar issue (with Opera, Konqueror, and FireFox) in Kubuntu 8.10 and 9.04. Windows is fine. I've read that removing the router's IP is the way to go and it does work (I have a cheap Dynex wireless router with IP 192.168.2.1), but something (probably KNetworkManager) keeps putting it back and I have to go back in and remove the entry again a bit later! Have you had to deal with your resolv.conf file being changed back to what it was previously? If not, I'd like to hear how you managed to get around that.

Thanks.

Opera 9.6 & 10 work great for me on Mint 6 (base on Ubuntu 8.10) under Gnome, untill I added Flash.

This message is posted using Opera 9.6 using Debain Lenny/XFCE, and it is very snappy (no flash installed).
