Opera 7.5

So I decided to "upgrade" (always a subjective term) to the free version of Opera 7.51 from 7.23.

It took me a little while to arrange the toolbar icons at the top to simulate the feel of 7.23, but after I did, and got used to the small icons instead of the big blue candy ones, it was all good. I still don't get why the rewind button is so riced out. Does it function differently than the old one? I don't know. I haven't used it yet.

Overall, 7.5 is... basically the same as the old version. Some stuff has moved around and some stuff has been worded differently, but that's it. Maybe I'm overlooking a lot of stuff, like what's under the hood.

Things render a bit differently in the new version, as is to be expected, I guess. One anomaly that's staring me in the face right now is the "Search!" button that has migrated to a spot directly under the "Search Category" header (right here on the Anandtech forums, I mean). It used to be off to the side of the box where you type, and I liked it there.

One issue, though: On some pages, I get a file download dialogue (or three), asking whether I want to download what I can only guess are cookies, or ads, or something. I really don't know, and I haven't taken the time to look at the files to see for sure. For example, I went to billboard.com, and I got three of these boxes on every page. I didn't download any of the files.

It doesn't happen often, but maybe someone else using this version could offer some insight.

Opera 7.51 is, all said, a nice change of pace. As long as it's better than IE, I'm totally down. Anyone else using it?

I'm using it. I don't know if it's my computer or what though, but if I leave my computer on for a few hours Opera gets to be REALLY? slow. Everything else on my computer runs at normal speed though. Any ideas?

I'm using it and it's great except for one problem, I can't post to AT with it so I have to use IE :(

Everything else works just fine though.

I'm tempted to try firefox though so I can stop using IE which I hate with a passion...

Syringer, I dunno... I haven't experienced that. It sounds disturbing. Maybe it's a memory leak?

Mnementh, why can't you post on AT??

its because of how opera renders stuss it puts alot in the cash and doesnt release it tll you close opera
you can go into the prefs and just limit the ammount of memory opera can use, ive always set mine at 20megs and never had issues

This is how I see it. Opera does not render pages correctly whereas Firefox and IE does. Opera costs money unless you want ads or unless you want to pirate software. That right there is enough to make me not use it. Both IE and Firefox are free. IE can do most stuff Firefox can do if you get 3rd party software. However since firefox has more features out of the box and since I've gotten to like tabs now and I don't really like myie2. Firefox > IE > Opera.

i have yet to see a page that does not render correctly in opera, its faster then FF and IE, it only costs 15$ if your a student, its tabs and other features work better then thoes in FF
opera >= FF = Mozilla > netscape > Ie + Addons (myie2, crazybrowser) > IE

Agree. I have been using Opera 7.51. In fact, typing on it right now to post in AT. I have also firefox 0.9, but truth said, Opera is still the speed champion.

I really like the new look of version 7.51, and the ability to put the tabs on the bottom of the window are a must for me. Excellent pop up control, and also the option to be selective about cookies usage...... Also, by far, the fastest and most efficent usage of cache (see how fast a page re-renders when you hit "back")

Opera works great after installation, but to get the most out of it you have to tweak a little. At work, some pages refuse to run in Opera, but refuse also to run in anything that is not IE.... :( When I have to use IE, I just feel insecure. Opera 7.51 still number 1.

As disadvantage, Opera is more voracious in the RAM usage, but a system properly configured with enough RAM should have no problems.

Alex

PS. Make sure you install the Java bundled with Opera.

I went to billboard and I don't see anything abnormal, or the choice to download....... check your settings.

I haven't been getting it either. I went there twice just to check. It did happen on some other site, though. I'm not sure what the deal is... I'll check all my settings to see if anything is amiss. Odd problem.

Been using 7.5 for a bit, but havent noticed much difference. Hard to improve on near perfection as it is. New icons are nice though.

i never tried opera, but i would switch netscape to the end. it is based on gecko, but i don't think they updated it that frequently, which makes it somewhat buggy.

Opera doesn't tolerate non-standard code as well as IE and Firefox.

It should be:

Mozilla 1.7 & FF > opera > netscape > IE

Netscape is still too buggy, whereas mozilla 1.7 is stable and very fast. Opera still has page rendering issues.

Mozilla 1.7 renders faster than IE IMHO.

Errr that's because Opera follows the standards unlike IE...

Seriously, opera has come a long way over the years. I rarely ever have a problem with it. I dunno who posted saying they couldnt get the forum to work with it, but obviously thats not the case.

7.5 just seals the deal. Ive had firefox crash on me, and its aggravatingly slow. Maybe thats just cause Im used to a fast browser, not a clunked together POS.

forum woerks fine with oper and has sence version 5.x, because ive used it for about that long. if you have it identify as OPERA< you dont see the quick reply box, buy when you change it to anything else it works fine

only thing 7.5 doesnt do right is drop down menues on some random sites, that is kind of annoying but it just takes a few extra clicks to get around that anyway

its popup blocking is supurb, as well as cookie management
