Been thinking about doing this for a while, right now I have a known brand, aging, but according to my research still secure, I wanna upgrade to something I can put OpenWRT on ... and wondering what AT networking would recommend in that department?

Just try it yourself. You can always go back to factory firmware.
Indeed.. my current hardware is not supported, so was just wondering.. Maybe my question should have been “Anyone rolling with openwrt? Whats your hardware?” :).

One of the routers is an antique TP-Link 150Mbps TP-Link TL-WR710N travel router.

Tried OpenWRT (now called LEDE) 2 or 3 times on it, didn't like the UI, so reverted back to factory, and then to DD-WRT.

Another is Netgear R6300 running FreshTomato.

So no real recommendation here.

Well, found OpenWRT "recommended" routers on their website.

Googled result.
